Grand jury indicts rape-trial attorney

Attorney Joseph Cavallo, who defended the son of an Orange County
assistant sheriff against sexual assault charges, has been indicted
by the Orange County Grand Jury on charges of conspiracy involving
bail bondsmen, Cavallo’s attorney John Barnett said Thursday.
Barnett said he had not seen the indictment but he understood the
charges to be conspiracy. Officials from the Orange County District
Attorney’s Office declined to comment Thursday.
Cavallo will be presented with the indictment today, Barnett said,
adding that he plans to represent Cavallo in the trial.
Cavallo was the lead defense attorney for 20-year-old Greg Haidl,
who was convicted along with two other men in March of sexually
assaulting an unconscious girl when they were teenagers.
Haidl is the son of former Assistant Sheriff Don Haidl.
Greg Haidl and co-defendants Kyle Nachreiner and Keith Spann are
in jail awaiting sentencing.
