Chargers down Irvine

The Edison High girls’ tennis team picked up two more nonleague

victories last week to run its winning streak to three matches.

The Chargers’ most recent victory was a 16-2 defeat of Irvine.

The highlight of the match for Edison was the play at No. 1

doubles by seniors Vi Truong and Lauren Okine, who swept their

Vaqueros opponents, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Melissa Boyer, playing

at No. 3 singles, defeated the first and third singles players from

Irvine before being subbed out.

Edison also defeated Palos Verdes, 12-6, again with Truong and

Okine sweeping at No. 1 doubles, this time by scores of 6-1, 6-0,

6-1.

Through Monday, the tandem is undefeated on the year, with six 6-0

sets in their 15 wins.

Also earning sweeps for the Chargers were junior Brittany Bass at

No. 1 singles, who won 6-3, 6-2, 6-1; and the No. 2 doubles team of

Boyer and senior Carly Spreeman, who defeated their three opponents,

7-5, 6-4, 6-1.

Edison, which lost its season opener on Sept. 12 to San Clemente,

began its win streak with a victory over Rosary on Sept. 13.

In that win, sophomore Shauna Henderson played the match of the

day for Edison, defeating Rosary’s top singles player, freshman Jen

Buchannon, 7-6 (8-6), in the final match of the day.

“We’re going to get better the more we play and the more we

practice,” Edison coach Nick Friendet said. “Vi Truong and Lauren

Okine are deadly as a doubles team. They know how to play and have

played in a lot of big matches together and have had good success.

“What sets them apart is their athleticism and shot-making. They

can break open a match in a second, and they can be one of the

county’s best teams and one of Edison’s best teams.”
