Senior Amanda Vazquez recorded a match-high 22 kills and led the UC
Irvine women’s volleyball team to its second victory Saturday, a
30-27, 27-30, 30-27, 27-30, 15-9 triumph over visiting Long Island at
Crawford Court.
UCI had posted a five-game victory earlier in the day over
Hofstra, as sophomore transfer Kristin Kelley slammed a match-leading
and collegiate career-high 21 kills.
Against Long Island, Trisha White followed Vazquez with 18 kills,
while Whitney Pavlik posted 16 and Kelley notched 15.
Both Lizelle Jackson and Martina Wagner posted 21 kills apiece for
Long Island, while Adela Igniska and Jade Gold had 10 each.
UCI improves to 2-1 while Long Island falls to 0-3.
Menzel races to victory
* SWIMMING: Newport Beach resident Todd Menzel successfully
defended last year’s victory and finished first in the 12th annual
Don Burns one-mile ocean swim Saturday at Big Corona Beach.
Menzel clocked 21 minutes, 18 seconds in the race, held in honor
of the late Don Burns, a 37-year Newport resident. Burns was a former
USC lineman who went on to have a 31-year teaching career in
Newport-Mesa, where he also coached football at Newport Harbor High,
Costa Mesa and Estancia. He died in 1993.
UC Irvine student Wes Wuchner finished 63rd in Saturday’s event in
27:48.
On the women’s side, UCI student Monica Fox finished 21st in
24:50, ahead of other UCI students Mara Matl (68th in 28:25) and
Charissa So (84th in 29:23). Newport Beach’s Carol Jewell placed 91st
in 30:27.
Lions trounce Bethany
* SOCCER: Senior Heather Tape notched a career-high four goals and
the Vanguard University women’s soccer team defeated visiting
Bethany, 13-0, in a nonconference game Saturday.
The Lions (1-1) won in convincing fashion, as Megan Swann and
Heather Hutton scored two goals apiece, while Emilia Miller, Madison
Perry, Bethany Monka, Erika Barlow and Katie Guernsey added one score
each.
The Lions scored four times in five minutes following their first
goal in the 12th minute.
Vanguard opens strong
* VOLLEYBALL: Vanguard University’s women’s volleyball team opened
the season with two straight victories Friday in the Otter Classic
hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Lions defeated Charleston (W.Va.), 30-21, 30-15, 30-22, and
then downed Chico State, 31-33, 30-28, 31-29, 30-28.
