Sawdust skimboard art auction tonight
In Project Skimboard, Sawdust Festival exhibitors were given a
blank skimboard to turn into a work of art. The boards will be
auctioned at 7 tonight with the proceeds going to Surfrider
Foundation, Laguna Outreach for Community Arts and the Sawdust Art
Festival’s programs. The fundraiser will feature music by surf band

Gallimaufry presents ‘A Chorus Line’
Gallimaufry Performing Arts presents “A Chorus Line,” Michael
Bennett’s tale of Broadway’s gypsies (chorus line dancers), which won
a Pulitzer, the New York Drama Critics Award, nine Tonys and became
the longest-running show in Broadway history. Marvin Hamlisch and
Edward Kleban’s score includes “Nothing,” “The Music and the Mirror,”
“Dance: Ten, Looks: Three,” “What I Did for Love” and “One.” Musical
direction by Roxana Ward, choreography by Luis Avila and produced and
directed by Steve Josephson. Performances are at 8 tonight and
Saturday at the Artists’ Theatre, 625 Park Ave. Tickets are $20 for

‘Surf’s Up’ at Festival of Arts on Saturday
The Festival of Arts is having its “Surf’s Up” day from noon to 4
p.m. Saturday. The event celebrates the history of surfing and the
unique California lifestyle, including tidepool and marine life
programs with an aquarium on wheels, custom painted and vintage
surfboards surf related art, music by The Eliminators surf band, an
exhibit of Woody cars and screenings of Greg McGillivray surf film
“Five Summer Stories” in the Forum Theatre. Event activities are free
with admission.

Concerts at Bluebird Park continue
Sunday marks the third concert of the eight-week season of the
2005 Summer Concert Series at Bluebird Park, with folk music
performed by Jason Feddy will be on Sunday. The concerts are free and
go from 5 to 7 p.m. Bluebird Park is at the corner of Bluebird Drive

Laguna Art Museum receives grant
Laguna Art Museum will receive a $150,000 grant from the federal
Institute of Museum and Library Services, as part the Institute’s
Museums for America program. The Institute is an independent Federal
grant-making agency dedicated to libraries and museums that serve
their communities.
One hundred and sixty nine museums were awarded $16,859,240 under this highly competitive Museums for America grant program. The
largest federal grant program for museums in the country, the
Institute received 543 applications requesting more than $50 million.
The Museum will use the grant money for a three-year plan titled
California Art of the Century II: Reclaiming a Museum’s Cultural
Identity and Legacy. The plan includes two major new exhibitions,
William Wendt: A Retrospective and An Idiosyncratic History: Laguna
Art Museum’s Permanent Collection of California Art. Both exhibitions
are centerpieces of the Museum’s 90th Anniversary celebration in

Playhouse place
for new musical
“The Musical of Musicals -- The Musical” is being performed
through Sept. 4 at Laguna Playhouse. See the West Coast premiere of
the sensational new musical that celebrates and satirizes Rogers and
Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Jerry Herman and
Kander and Ebb.

Museum plans
docent class
Laguna Art Museum is looking for new members for its Docent Corps
to conduct informative tours and educational outreach about the
museum’s exhibitions for adults, children, and a variety of schools
and organizations.
An informational tea will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 11,
and weekly provisional training will begin in October.

Artists help artists with ‘Tie One On’
Festival of Arts will host its 5th annual “Tie One On” benefit
from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 13. The artists design original artwork
using a tie as their canvas.
All proceeds go to the artists in need fund, which offers
financial assistance to artists who have suffered as a result of
financial or health hardship.
Laguna Beach artist and Arts Commission chair Mike Tauber will be
the auctioneer. More than 100 ties will be auctioned with a starting
bid of $50. Festival of Arts is at 650 Laguna Canyon Road.
