Church plans major expansion

A small church that currently holds services at the Huntington Beach

Central Library is planning a major expansion into an old tennis and

racquetball club.

The Seabreeze Church is currently working on a plan to build a

101,000-square-foot facility on the old Lindborg Racquet Club, about

a half-mile from its current location.

Because of financial constraints, the church has phased the

project out over 15 years. In the end, the church hopes to have a

congregation hall that can serve about 1,200 people, along with

sports facilities, a fellowship hall, classrooms and a day-care

center.

First, the church plans to install a 10,000-square-foot temporary

structure for worship, along with a 13,150-square-foot facility for

classrooms and meetings.

By about 2010, the church hopes to construct its first permanent

building -- a 41,260-square-foot, two-story education building, and

by 2015, church leaders hope to create a three-story parking

structure capable of holding 600 cars. By 2020, church officials hope

to construct a 41,000-square-foot church and an 18,750-square-foot

gymnasium.

Seabreeze was founded on Easter 1988 by John Worcestor of Coast

Community Church, a small outfit based at Goldenwest College,

according the Seabreeze website. Only one person came to the first

Seabreeze service, but the church’s laid-back atmosphere attracted

more followers and by 1998, the church’s average attendance was about

600 followers per week.

Future anglers get ready for fishing derby

Children should get their fishing poles out and their tackle boxes

in order. The Huntington Beach Huck Finn Fishing Derby and Costume

Contest will be held on the Pier on Aug. 27.

This event, from 9:30 a.m. to noon, is free. Children 15 and under

can dress up like the protagonist in Mark Twain’s literary classic.

Children must bring their own poles and tackle. A grand prize for the

largest fish caught will be awarded, along with many others,

including awards for the best-dressed Huck Finn and Becky Thatcher.

Some of the prizes this year include bicycles, fishing poles, fishing

passes and gift certificates.

Last year, more than 325 children participated in the event,

making it the biggest event ever in the history of the fishing derby.

This year is expected to be just as popular.

The event is sponsored by the City of Huntington Beach Community

Services Department and will be hosted by Cliff Johnson, the owner

and operator of Let’s Go Fishing, and by Western Fishing & Boating

Radio. Major Participating Organizations include Sport Chalet,

Ruby’s, Big Fish Tackle, Carl’s Jr. Restaurants, Huntington Beach

Fishing & Recreation Club, the cities of Huntington Beach and Seal

Beach and the Surf City Store.

Children 15 and younger can register for free at the pier from 8

to 9:15 a.m. on the morning of the event.

Boys & Girls Club hosts National Kids Day

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley will once again host a

free carnival celebration for National Kids Day. This one-day event

will be held on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Boys & Girls

Club’s Kingston Branch, located in Mile Square Park at 16852

Brookhurst St. in Fountain Valley.

The celebration will include a carnival with three bounce houses,

cotton candy, games, prizes, face painting, giveaways, arts and

crafts projects and entertainment!

More than 20 local organizations will also be on hand to provide

information about health, safety and community resources. The

Community Care Dental Center will offer free dental screenings for.

Local restaurants, including BJ’s Pizza, Coco’s, Denny’s, Hot Dog on

a Stick, Jamba Juice, The Lazy Dog Cafe and Mrs. Fields Cookies will

offer free samples of kid-friendly food, competing to win the most

votes and be named the KidsDay Kids’ Choice Restaurant of the Year.

There will also be performances by the Boys & Girls Club Talent

Show Finalists, Clubhouse Theater, Jama’s Gymnastics, martial arts

demonstrations, as well as a special performance by Relampago del

Cielo Grupo Folklorico

Every child who attends will receive a free opportunity drawing

ticket, getting the chance to win great prizes like free bowling

games, miniature golf, aquarium and zoo passes and tickets to Six

Flags Magic Mountain.
