FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT

Quiksilver and Balboa Performing Arts Theater present Quiksilver’s

Family Movie Night, a free family event featuring the premiere of

“Young Guns 2,” a surf film starring Kelly Slater. There will be an

autograph session with Quiksilver athletes, games, prizes and more.

The event opens at 6:30 p.m. for picnics; the movie starts at 8:15

p.m. at Peninsula Park Field, next to the Balboa Pier in Newport

OTESANEK

As part of its summer film series “Unruly Frames and Fantastic

Visions,” the UC Irvine Film and Video Center presents “Otensanek.”

In this reinterpretation of a Czech fairytale, all that Bozena wants

is a baby, but she and Karel are plagued by infertility. Their

prayers seem to be miraculously answered when Karel carves a child

from a tree root, and Bozena’s intense maternal desire brings it to

life. Before long, their little miracle’s monstrous appetite

threatens to become all-consuming. The movie will begin at 7 p.m. in

the Humanities Instructional Building, Room 100, UC Irvine campus.

SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK

A pop culture phenomenon comes to the musical stage. The

Emmy-winning, 1970s, Saturday morning cartoon series that taught

history, grammar, math, science and politics through clever, tuneful

songs has been making a comeback. The musical, directed by Terri

Miller Schmidt, will be staged Thursday through Saturday evenings and

Sunday afternoons at the Newport Theatre Arts Center, 2501 Cliff

RAY ROMANO

Everybody loves him and he’s coming to Orange County to perform

his Emmy-winning stand-up comedy. Shows will be at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

JAZZ FESTIVAL

The Orange County Classic Jazz Festival with classic, toe-tapping

jazz returns to Costa Mesa. All ballroom performances will take place

in the Hilton, 3050 Bristol St., Costa Mesa, with special musical

sets slated for August 5 and 6 at the Holiday Inn’s lobby lounge,

As part of its Friday Night Film Series, Orange Coast College will

screen “Maltese Falcon,” which stars Humphrey Bogart. Favorites from

film noir mysteries to romantic comedies are introduced by film

critic and retired Orange Coast College professor Arthur Taussig. The

The Center Stage Chapter of The Guilds of the Orange County
