Breakers to open season

The Newport Beach Breakers of World Team Tennis open their season

Tuesday against the visiting Springfield Lasers at 7 p.m. at

Palisades Tennis Club.

Looking to defend their WTT championship, the Breakers, who

defeated the Delaware Smash, 23-17, in last year’s championship

match, return key player Ramon Delgado, last year’s league finals

MVP.

Newport Beach stunned the five-time defending champion Sacramento

Capitals last season in the Western Conference semifinal to advance

to the championship match.

Headlining the Breakers this year is 2004 Wimbledon women’s

singles champion Maria Sharapova, who is scheduled to play a July 23

match against the visiting St. Louis Aces.

Anna Kournikova is scheduled to visit Thursday as a member of the

Capitals.

Two-time Grand Slam singles champion Patrick Rafter is scheduled

to visit July 11 with the Philadelphia Freedoms.
