Registration for the 2005 Youth Flag Football, for boys and girls
ages 8 to 13. The program starts on Sept. 26 and ends on Dec. 3. This
program provides youth in the community the opportunity to
participate in a noncompetitive Flag Football league. Participants
will learn the basics of Flag Football, meet new friends and have
fun. Register in person Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the
Balearic Community Center, 1975 Balearic Drive, Costa Mesa.
Registration closes on Sept. 23. Registration is taken on a

“Summertime and the living is -- SAFE” will be the topic at this
month’s Speak Up Newport meeting. The Newport Beach Police Department
will give a presentation about summertime safety tips with video of
past July 4th’s at the beaches and special safety procedures in
effect for the Fourth of July. Questions and answers will follow the

Join the Assistance League of Newport-Mesa as it celebrates 65
years of service from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the League’s headquarters.
A brief ceremony will include comments by past presidents, agency
partners and former clients. The event will conclude with champagne
toast and birthday cake to be cut by 45-year League member Joc
Hartley. The League’s past presidents in attendance will blow out the

The Goin’ South Band -- musical styles and instruments developed
in the South during the last century, including street jazz from New

A teen pregnancy prevention event is being sponsored by the Camp
Fire USA teens from Costa Mesa. This event will not only address the
issue of teen pregnancy, but also promote awareness on behalf of this
issue -- the teens would like to prevent young adults from becoming
parents too soon. This event will take place from 10 a.m. 3 p.m.,
followed by a carnival with live entertainment and booths at the Save

The 24th Annual Concours de Nice, a Cobra car show and fundraiser
to benefit Lou Gehrig’s Disease, sponsored by the Cobra Owners Club

Alex’s Lemonade Stand will raise money for pediatric cancer
research from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at lululemon athletica, across from
Bloomingdales in Fashion Island. The lemonade stand at Fashion Island
will be in honor of John Taggart, a courageous 4-year-old who is
fighting a rare form of pediatric cancer called neuroblastoma. John,
a Costa Mesa resident, was diagnosed shortly before his 2nd birthday.
John’s cancer has relapsed twice and he is now recovering from a stem
cell transplant. There is no set price for the lemonade or the

“When you look good, you feel better,” a class that teaches cancer
patients makeup, wig and turban tips, sponsored by the American
