A’s top Padres, 3-2

The Newport Beach Little League A’s defeated the Padres, 3-2, in the

Majors division championship game Wednesday night at Lincoln

Elementary.

Johnny Metcalfe singled in Bryan Tallichet in the top of the sixth

inning for the eventual game-winning run. The Padres took an initial

2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a fielding error with

the bases loaded.

In the top of the fifth, the A’s Brent Lawson singled, Metcalfe

hit a double and Lawson eventually scored on a wild pitch to cut the

deficit to 2-1. Spencer Haly hit a solo shot to left-center field in

the top of the sixth, tying the score at 2.

Metcalfe finished 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Bruce Bearer was 2

for 3 and Lawson 2 for 4. Bryce Ashton pitched a complete-game

three-hitter while Thomsen tossed a complete game for the Padres.

The A’s began the season 1-3 but rallied to win 14 of their last 16, finishing 16-5 as Newport Beach Little League Majors champions.
