Mets 10, Cubs 6: Max Hume had a triple, a ground-rule double and
drove in two runs to lead the Mets to a 10-6 victory over the Cubs in
a Costa Mesa National Little League Minor A playoff game May 23.
Jesse Paz, Aaron Wood, Christian Aguilar, Manolo Laguna and Brooks
Watkins also had key hits for the Mets. Paz and Wood combined for 10
strikeouts. Sammy Borkton had two great catches in the outfield.
T-ball
Braves, Pirates: Joey Wakely made solid plays from third base and
left field for the Braves. Matty Rodgers had two extraordinary
putouts, one after a dive to third base. Rohan Ronvelia hit a
towering fly ball over the left fielder’s head. Liam Jason made a tag
at second after a throw from center field. Gavin Kane made a put out
at third. Sarah Bordelon, Kevin Volk, Sophie Beazley and Cameron
Shirmer each had solid hits.
Cubs, Padres: In the second inning, Katie Kuttler hit a single to
deep left and Riley Lord drove the ball back through the box for the
Cubs. Jason Chesemore hit the team’s first home run with a powerful
drive to center that landed a few yards short of the fence. Logan
Twardowski kept on top of the action at first base in the first
inning.
Newport Harbor Baseball Association
Pinto
All-Star team: The NHBA Pinto American All-Star team captured
second place in the Irvine Pony Memorial Day tournament. The team won
its division by defeating Whittier All Stars, 20-16, and Tustin All
Stars, 19-12, on Saturday. On Sunday, the Newport team beat Irvine
Red All Stars, 14-3, to clinch its division and reach the semifinals.
In semifinal play Sunday evening, Newport beat Tustin, 12-11.
Trailing by three runs in its last at-bat, the team rallied to win,
as Jeremiah Sheldon, Sean Korkmaz and Adam Freeman all singled with
one out. Sheldon then scored to cut the lead to 11-9. Cameron Jabara
then sent a grounder to third. The third basemen fired the ball
toward second base attempting to start a double play. The ball went
wide of the base and into right field allowing Korkmaz and Freeman to
score. Jabara then came in to end the game.
Newport lost in the championship game, 26-13, Monday to the Irvine
Blue All Stars, finishing tournament play 4-1, marking the best
finish by NHBA Pinto American in the 15-year history of the Irvine
tournament.
Other players on the team are Vincenzo Bartelone, Matthew Brodie,
Steven Faulconer, Toni Holland, Shane Mitchell, Dillon Murphy, Jack
Rapillo and Jordan Teisan.
Pitch, Hit & Run
Vinnie Bartolona, Chase Kapana and Brennan Callahan were overall
champions in their respective age groups of the Pitch, Hit & Run
competition hosted by the city of Newport Beach May 15 at Bob Henry
Park.

AYSO
Girls under-10
Boomerangs: The AYSO girls under-10 Corona del Mar Boomerangs
soccer team went undefeated this spring season to finish 8-0. The
team includes Lauren Dean, Jaime Smith, Eliza Clark, Molly Keasey,
Katie Scott, Ashley Rhodes, Victoria Abbott, Allison Gordon and Holly
Tarbell. The team is coached by Dave Scott and Vince Abbott.
CAMPS
Youth baseball camps spanning four weeks will take place this
summer at Newport Harbor High.
Director Joel Desguin, Newport Harbor’s varsity baseball coach,
along with Orange Coast head man John Altobelli, will lead three
weeks of youth camps (ages 6-10) and one week of instruction for
middle school students ages 11-14.
Youth camps run June 27-30, July 18-21 and July 25-28. The middle
school camp runs July 11-14. Camp days for all ages last from 9 a.m.
to noon.
Cost is $150 per camper with a family discount of $125 a player.
Players need to bring a glove, hat, baseball pants and sunscreen
and are asked to label all equipment.
Players will be split into age- and skill-appropriate groups.
Instruction will focus on basic skills and fundamentals, along with
sportsmanship and exposing campers to game experience.
All players will receive a T-shirt and snacks.
