In its final regular season game, Sportsworld topped VFW, 7-1, at
Riddle Field to lay claim to the Laguna Beach Little League Majors
Division championship.
The victory gave Sportsworld, which takes on Team Hobie today in a
4:30 p.m. postseason tournament game, a 14-6 record.
Sportsworld took command early, as a double by Brian Vail was
followed by a triple by Austin Paxson, which scored Vail.
Stevie Contursi added to the momentum with a solid RBI up the
middle before Alex Iannotti doubled off the wall.
Zack Jaffee later singled as Sportsworld jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
Sportsworld struck again for two more runs in the top of the
third, a rally that started when Vail doubled for the second time.
Paxson then got his second hit of the game, a single which
advanced Vail to third base, and sacrifice flies by Contursi and
Iannottti scored Vail and Paxson for a 6-0 advantage.
Paxson ended his outstanding pitching effort after five innings of
work. He was replaced by Taylor Preston, who closed on the mound for
Sportsworld.
VFW scored its only run when Santi Pierini singled and scored on a
base hit up the middle by Blake Hester.
Sportsworld scored its final run when Contursi doubled and scored
on a double by Drew Wheeler.
