Adult leagues
Softball
For adults, a men’s 16-inch softball league -- also known as the
mush ball league -- begins in late June, with the first games
scheduled for the week of June 27 at Riddle Field, home of Laguna
Beach Little League.
Also offered is a men’s and women’s 12-inch softball league, and a
coed 12-inch softball league also could be offered, said Ron Lutz,
recreation supervisor for the city.
“We have always offered the a 12-inch softball league for both men
and women, but we have not run one in 10 years, due to lack of
interest,” Lutz said. “We still are offering both leagues and hope to
get people interested in playing this summer. We’d also offer a
12-inch coed softball league, if we get enough interest shown.”
Volleyball
The city also offers two-player men’s AAA volleyball tournament
June 18 and 19 and a two-player women’s AAA volleyball tournament
July 16 and 17, both at Main Beach.
Surfing
Beginning June 25, the lookout begins for good surf so that the
annual Brooks Street Classic, a surfing event staged since 1955, can
get underway.
Due to poor surf conditions, last year’s contest didn’t run until
Labor Day weekend, when the surf finally picked up, Ron Lutz said.
The contest has been canceled due to lack of good surf on three
occasions (1989, 2002, 2003) since 1955.
Youth leagues
Volleyball
A series of youth two-player volleyball events, which also will be
held at Main Beach, offers play on Thursdays in boys’, girls’ and
coed divisions.
In addition to a coed-age-group play, 14-and-under competition
will be held July 28, followed by 16-and-under play on Aug. 4 and
18-and-under play on Aug. 18.
For information on any of the summer adult or youth sports leagues
offered through the city, call Ron Lutz at (949) 497-0303.
