OCC opens with Fresno

The Orange Coast College baseball team will begin its first state

Final Four appearance since 1993 against host Fresno City College

Saturday at 6 p.m.

The Pirates (29-16), who defeated fellow Orange Empire Conference

co-champion Santa Ana, 7-6, Sunday, to win one of two Southern

California super regionals, is attempting to win its first state

title since 1980.

Fresno is 34-6 this season.

The double-elimination tournament, scheduled to conclude Monday,

also includes Palomar (32-9) and Santa Rosa (29-13).

Pemstein’s season ends

* GOLF: Newport Harbor High senior golfer Davis Pemstein shot

4-over-par 76 Monday in the CIF individual championship tournament at

Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs.

The top 28 golfers advance to the CIF/Southern California Golf

Association tournament with the chance to advance to the CIF state

tournament.

Pemstein missed the top 28 by two strokes and his season ends.

Murietta Valley’s Ricky Fowler (64) was the medalist.

Newport Harbor Coach Scott Tarnow said 20 golfers shot under par.

Anteaters in regional

* TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine junior Mike Beerer, the Big West

Conference champion in the hammer throw, highlights seven Anteaters

who will compete in the NCAA West regional, Friday at Saturday at the

University of Oregon in Eugene.

The men’s hammer throw final is scheduled Saturday at 2:40 p.m.

Freshman Juliuan Eison and junior John Wratten will compete in the

men’s high jump, while juniors Ricky Barnes and Tom Whelan will

represent the ‘Eaters in the 1,500 meters.

Sophomore Dayne Comrie is slated to run the men’s 400 hurdles,

while senior Kim Ramirez is among the women’s 1,500 field.

UCI signs standout

* TENNIS: Alexandra Borowicz, the CIF North Coast Section singles

champion last fall, has signed a letter of intent to compete

collegiately at UC Irvine, the school announced Monday.

Borowicz, a senior at Montgomery High in Santa Rosa, is ranked No.

2 in Northern California.

“We are delighted to have signed one of the top players in the

state,” UCI Coach Mike Edles said. “Alexandra is known for being a

tenacious competitor and an unselfish team player. She will make an

immediate impact on our team next season.”
