Volunteers needed to test seawater

The Laguna Beach Surfrider chapter is looking for volunteers to test

ocean water at their favorite beach for bacteria this summer. Test

results will be posted in local businesses.

Volunteers are not required to live in Laguna Beach, and people of

all ages are encouraged to participate. High school students,

including incoming freshmen, will earn community service hours for

participating in the program.

Testing takes about 30 minutes once a week, and will be done at

31973 S. Coast Highway, adjacent to Thousand Steps Beach.

Planning Commission has two open seats

The Laguna Beach City Council is inviting applications for two

open seats on the Planning Commission.

The commission is a five-member body that reviews and advises the

council on issues related to development and land uses in the city.

Commissioners serve a two-year term, and receive $90 per month for

their services.

The commission meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each

month at 7 p.m., and study sessions are also held regularly.

Applications are available in the city clerk’s office at City Hall,

505 Forest Ave. Applications must be filed with the clerk by 5 p.m.

Tuesday, June 14, and all applicants will be interviewed by the

council at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 21 at council chambers.

Cooper, Campbell join conservancy board

Catharine Cooper, chair of the city’s Open Space Committee, and

Sonia Campbell, were elected to the Laguna Canyon Conservancy board

at the conservancy’s dinner meeting May 2.

Reelected were: Jeanie Bernstein, Max Brown, Ed Drollinger, Gene

Felder, J.J. Gasparotti, Siggy Johnson, John Keith, Sharon Larimer,

Fran McGowan, John Pfeffer, Kimberly Stuart, Diane Valentino, Gail

Waite, and Carolyn Wood.

Membership in the Laguna Canyon Conservancy is $10 per year, which

can be sent to Laguna Canyon Conservancy, P.O. Box 1383, Laguna

Beach, CA 92652.

Legion, VFW plan remembrance

The Laguna Beach American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will

conduct a Memorial Day ceremony in remembrance of comrades who died

in all the wars and conflicts protecting our country.

The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, May 30 at Monument

Point in Heisler Park. Keynote speaker will be 71st District

Assemblyman Todd Spitzer.

Music by Larry Wohrman of Diamond DJ’s will begin at 10:30 a.m.

The Marine Firing Detail from Camp Pendleton will provide a 21-gun

salute.

The public is encouraged to come early, as seating is limited. For

Woman’s Club offers health care workshop

The Laguna Beach Woman’s Club will hold a free Advance Health Care

Directive workshop at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 5 in the clubhouse, 286 St.

Ann’s Drive.

The Directives are state-recognized legal documents that tell

doctors, relatives and care-givers what to do -- or not do -- in the

event of a catastrophic medical condition, such as coma or brain

death, in which the patient cannot speak for him or herself.

Attorney R. Lee Andersen will lead the group through the steps for

completing individual directives and will notarize each form so that

participants can leave with a fully-executed document. The event is

open to the public, and reservations are not required. For more

Top of World group adds three board members

The board of directors of the Top of the World Neighborhood Assn.

elected three additional board members at its May 11 board meeting.

Joining the TOWNA board are Michelle Falkowski, Les Miklosy, and

Margot Seeholzer.

The board is concerned about fire prevention, and the likelihood

of extremely dangerous wildfire conditions this year. It will hold a

general meeting in August that will focus on fire prevention

measures.
