Commission cuts the park music schedule

At Monday’s Arts Commission meeting, the commission voted to

reduce the number of concerts at Bluebird Park by one in the spirit

of comprise, shortening this summer season to seven at that location,

with the last to be at Riddle Field as planned.

The commission acted on the recommendation of the City Council.

The Arts Commission will continue to work on identifying possible

venues and do a site analysis, including potential effects on

neighbors. Because it is late in the season, a change of venue from

Bluebird Park would be difficult to do this summer, officials said.

Music festival set through Sunday

Laguna Beach Live!, in collaboration with the Philharmonic Society

of Orange County and Laguna Chamber Music Society, is having its

third annual Laguna Beach Chamber Music Festival through April 17.

Pianist Christopher O’Riley is the 2005 Distinguished Mentor

Musician.

The festival will offer education, performances and events, with

concerts at 8 p.m. today and Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday at the

Artists’ Theatre. Free educational events include a master class by

O’Riley at 1 p.m. today at Laguna Beach Artists’ Theatre.

Joining Christopher O’Riley this year are cellist Abraham Feder,

violinist Bella Hristova and Yao Guang Zhia on clarinet.

Tickets for the concerts are $30 and $25, plus $15 for students.

Laguna Outreach art workshop today

Laguna Outreach Community Arts “Art Escapes” is a “Linocut

Printmaking” series to be taught today and April 22 by Enrique

Marshall from 1:45 to 4 p.m. Learn how line, negative and positive

spaces, are essential in creating an image. The artist will bring in

examples of her work, illustrating her technique. In the interest of

safety, “safetykut” will be used rather than linoleum to create a

printing block.

The class is suitable for all artistic levels. The cost is $30,

including materials; class size is limited. The workshop is at the

Playhouse gets new marketing director

Former Laguna Beach resident and Orange County Performing Arts

Center executive Greg Patterson has been appointed as the Laguna

Playhouse’s director of marketing. He’ll begin in early June.

Patterson has extensive art administration related experience and

served as Orange County Performing Arts Center’s vice-president of

marketing and communications from 1991 to 1998; Los Angeles Opera

director of public relations and marketing from 1998 to 2000; and San

Jose Repertory Theatre’s director of external relations since

February 2004.

Art and sea program scheduled for May

Laguna Outreach for Community Arts will offer, “Art and Sea

Adventures: The Art of Tide-Pooling,” in collaboration with the Ocean

Laguna Foundation.

The program includes a morning of tide-pool exploration with Ocean

Laguna Foundation docents followed by a hands-on watercolor journal

art workshop taught by Laguna Outreach for Community Arts resource

artists.

There also will be a watercolor journal, art supplies, postcards,

tote bag, refreshments and more, courtesy of Montage Resort and Spa.

Classes are from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 14 and 15. Meet at Treasure

Island Park, south entrance at South Coast Highway at Wesley Drive,

at the south edge of the Montage Resort, just below the parking lot.

Laguna artist hosts doll-making class

Artist and creative life coach Cherril Doty is offering an

opportunity “to play and explore your creative process” and build an

affirming creative identity through doll-making. The class is for

artists and nonartists alike and will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Art exhibit at local home opens today

Publicist Anita Halton will open her Laguna Beach home, 559 Alta

Comedian leads comedy workshop

Stand-up comic, producer and talent booker Lynn Epstein will be

teaching a Comedy Writing and Performance Workshop from 10 a.m. to 1

p.m. and started April 9 and on subsequent Saturdays.

booked. Classes culminate in a Comedy Night Showcase in Laguna Beach

with students’ original performances.

Club puts on annual art show and sale

The Woman’s Club of Laguna Beach will hold its fourth annual Women

Artist’s Art Auction, Show and Sale from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday and again

April 24. The event showcases the talents of local women artists.

Many media will be exhibited. Each work has been individually crafted

and is original.

Both days will feature a silent auction of the donated artwork to

help provide a venue for the work of new and emerging local women

artists. Attendance is free. Refreshments will be available. The

Museum hosts annual ‘Imagination’ events

Laguna Art Museum will host a day of hands-on art activities,

musical entertainment and treasure hunt with prizes for the 17th

annual Orange County Imagination Celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

April 30. This year’s general theme is “Imagination Takes Flight.”

The event links artists and educators in an effort to recognize,

promote and present quality visual and performing arts programs for

children and parents.

The museum’s event, “Soar into Art,” will offer art projects

revolving around the concept of air and flight, including flying

carpets, mobiles, balloon animals, bug making, face painting, a mural

project and more.

The treasure hunt is designed to encourage children to take a

closer look at the art on exhibition at each of the museum galleries.

Flight-related prizes will be awarded.

Laguna Beach Honors Choir will perform a medley of songs under the

‘The Best of the Best of the Best’ show off

“The Best of the Best of the Best” is Laguna College of Art and

Design’s Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition with 75 pieces of

original artwork created by students at each level exhibiting works

that represent drawing and painting, illustration, graphic design,

animation and sculpture.

Sculpture contest deadline nearing

The Laguna Beach Arts Commission will hold a sculpture competition

to add to the city’s public art collection.

The art will be located at the Village Green Park at the corner of

Monterey Street and Catalina Avenue.

The subject should be inspired by nature and should be figurative.

A vertical orientation is recommended. The piece must be no larger

than 5 feet wide and deep by a maximum of 7 feet tall.

Only original artwork that may not be reproduced should be

submitted. Honorarium is $10,000. Deadline is April 29. For

Filmmaker featured at Newport festival

Laguna filmmaker, writer and director Jeff Coffman’s “Fifty Years

of Filmmaking” is being shown at the Newport Beach Film Festival. The

film is a documentary, which examines the career and work of

award-winning cinematographer and director, John M. Stephens.

Coffman grew up in Jakarta, Indonesia, before moving to Laguna

Beach and attending Orange Coast College, where he received a

Certificate of Achievement in Film and Video. He was awarded Best

Documentary and Best Editing at the Orange Coast College Film

Festival 2004.

Coffman is currently living and working in Laguna Beach, for an

independent film company, Aloha Films Group, in addition to a

television show on PBS, Road Trip Nation. Coffman is writing his

first feature length script. This summer he plans to work on a major

motion picture with John M. Stephens.

“Fifty Years of Filmmaking” is 18:50 minutes and will be screened

Artists to host

studio night

Laguna Canyon Artists will host an Open Studio Night and silent

auction from 4 to 10 p.m. May 14, exhibiting a collection of diverse

and eclectic artwork, with more than 25 award winning artists

participating.

Proceeds from the silent auction will be donated to Laguna College

of Art and Design’s student scholarship fund. Preview of auction

pieces will be on display at individual studios for ongoing bidding

from 4 to 7 p.m.

The event will have live music, performance art, refreshments and

Laguna Art Museum’s “Around the World ... a taste of Travel and

Cuisine” spring benefit will be from 6 to 10:30 p.m. May 4 at the

Festival of Arts grounds, 650 Laguna Canyon Road, with proceeds to

support the museum’s exhibition and education programs.

The event will offer an evening of cuisine by chefs from many of

the area’s most prestigious coastal resorts, entertainment and a live

and silent auction of international travel and epicurean delights.

‘Rhapsody in Blue’

to feature variety

George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” will be featured in a concert

of classical, popular and ethnic music at 7:30 p.m. May 14.

Concert Pianist Jeffrey Briar will perform the Gershwin classic,

along with works by Mozart, Chopin and Scott Joplin. Linda Frank will

play original improvisations on the Celtic “Faery Harp,” and soprano

Christina Linhardt will interpret songs of Beethoven, Lerner and Lowe

and Gilbert and Sullivan at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship
