Kindergarten registration set

Laguna Beach Unified School District will be having kindergarten

registration for children 5 years old on or before Dec. 1. To

register, bring your child’s birth certificate, immunization record

and proof of residency within the boundaries of the district.

El Morro Elementary School, 8681 N. Coast Highway, will have

registration from 9 a.m. to noon. April 20. For information, call

Top of the World Elementary School, 21601 Tree Top Lane, will have

registration from 9 a.m. to noon. April 27. For information, call

Coffee Break will be Wednesday

The next Coffee Break, “When Being Cool Clashes with Being Kind:

Helping Your Child Embrace Differences,” will be from 8:15 to 10 a.m.

April 20 at the Surf and Sand Hotel, 1555 S. Coast Highway.

“Emotional intelligence requires the ability to connect to a wide

array of people,” Karen Redding said. “Our Laguna kids have limited

opportunities to experience much diversity before they leave home.”

A panel will discuss important aspects of diversity in Laguna.

“Guidelines will be offered to help your child benefit from

embracing differences will be illustrated with a focus on gay parents

and children in Laguna,” Redding said.

Coffee Break will review common myths versus realities; how to

expand a child’s emotional quotient by increasing their comfort; and

nonjudgmental sensitivity to differences.

Water district to award scholarships

For the fifth year in a row, South Coast Water District will award

up to three $500 scholarships to qualifying high school seniors who

live or go to school in the service area and are entering college

this fall. Applications are due by May 2.

To qualify for the district’s annual “Water Scholarship,”

graduating seniors must demonstrate interest and involvement in

public service, community service and/or the environment through

school and extra-curricular activities.

Middle school to host fundraiser

Thurston Middle School’s spring fundraiser “Out on the Town III”

is scheduled for April 27. The public is invited to join the

progressive walking tour of restaurants in town for appetizers and

drinks, with a buffet supper, desserts and dancing to DJ tunes.

There will be two assigned stops at 6 and 6:45 p.m. Dinner will be

served for everyone at 7:30 p.m. at Ocean Brewing Company.

Restaurants hosting the first two stops include Anastasia, Cabana,

Cedar Creek Inn, Romeo Cucina, and Sundried Tomato Cafe. Zinc Cafe

will provide desserts.

A postcard confirming the two designated stops will be mailed to

each guest.

Tickets are $60. Make checks payable to Thurston Middle School

PTA; either drop it off at the office at 2100 Park Ave. or mail to

Kathleen Moore, 84 Emerald Bay, Laguna Beach 92651.

Proceeds will benefit Thurston’s PTA and eighth-grade graduation.

Capacity is limited and sells out quickly.

Teens to perform musical comedy

The Generation GAP, Gallimaufry Performing Arts’ teen theater

company, will perform the musical “Weird Romance” at 7:30 p.m. April

22 and 2 and 7:30 p.m. April 23 at the Festival of Arts Forum

Theatre, 650 Laguna Canyon Road. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8

for students and seniors. Performances will be at the in Laguna

Beach.

The Generation GAP is a group of teens who are serious about their

work. The student-run theater company’s goal is to provide Laguna’s

youth the opportunity to experiment and learn all aspects of theater,

including producing, directing, performing, fundraising, designing,

managing, and project management.

This group of teens has been meeting for eight months in

preparation for this production. The process began with discussions

and readings of potential material for production.

After deciding on the show, the teens began negotiations for the

rights, prepared a budget, and secured the theater and began

fundraising. It was only after five months of pre-production that

rehearsals began.

The show is being directed and choreographed by Ren Lescault,

produced by Jazz Brice and musically directed by the company’s

artistic director, Noah Plomgren. The cast includes: Haley Bierbaum,

Jazz Brice, Rachel Busic, Brian Drummy, Annie Freeman, Patrick Kelly,

Adam Kenworthy, Brianna Krantz, Chloe Mansour, Fannie Olhats, Clara

Plomgren, Noah Plomgren, Arianna Ross, Shaina Silverman and Lindsay

Wayne.

St. Catherine’s to offer pre-K class

St. Catherine’s is offering a new pre-kindergarten class for the

2005-06 school year. The program will be taught by the school’s

Kindergarten teacher, Marie Webb. This program is a five day program

LBUSD offers adult education

Laguna Beach Unified School District is offering adult education

programs. English as a Second Language classes meet at 5:30 to 8:30

p.m. Monday to Thursday in room 90, behind the public swimming pool

at Manzanita Street and Park Avenue.

The class is free. Participants can register with the instructor.

Students invited to Princeton program

The Summer Institute for the Gifted will be offering a three-week

residential program July 17 to August 6 at Princeton University for

gifted students in the Laguna Beach area.

The prestigious three-week, co-educational summer programs are

offered to academically talented students in grades four through 11.

The deadline for applications is May 1.
