Late goal ties it

California Futbol Club Code Red opened its 2005 spring soccer season

with a win and a tie in weekend action.

In their first match, Code Red and the Pacific Breakers of Laguna

Beach fought to a 1-1 tie.

Down 1-0 in the first half, Code Red evened the score when Rebecca

Cruz put a Danica McGuire corner kick into the net.

The next day, Code Red held off cross-town rival Futbol Club

Bayern, 3-2.

Again, Code Red trailed, 1-0, but earned a tie when Alison Hensley

returned a goalie kick directly back into the net.

The defensive efforts of sweeper George Demes, fullback Lauren

Hanson and keeper Tiffany Van Tress helped keep the score tied at 1-1

at the half.

In the second half, Erika Longoria scored on a solo breakaway to

give Code Red its first lead, 2-1, but it was short-lived as FC

Bayern tied the match moments later.

Toward the end of regulation, Cruz took a pass from forward Erica

Cabibbo, and put in the winning goal.

Braves, 8; Giants, 6

Catcher Scotty Hauck delivered a three-run double in the seventh

inning to rally the Braves past the Giants.

In a tight ballgame, the Braves struck first when A.J. Cardenalli

scored on a suicide bunt by Ryan Strachan, who later stole home for a

2-0 lead.

The Giants rallied with a three-run third inning to forge a 3-2

lead, but the Braves tied the game again when Strachan walked and

again stole home.

Cody Wilkinson picked up an RBI for the Braves to again knot the

score, this time at 4-4 after four innings. But the Giants had went

ahead in the fifth by scoring two runs, before the Braves narrowed

the gap to 6-5, when Hauck -- who doubled to center -- scored on

Kevin Anderson’s single into right field.

A key defensive stop for the Braves came in the sixth inning, as

Cardenalli, at second base, teamed with Strachan, at shortstop, to

turn a double play and preserve the tie.

The Braves put it away in the seventh when Strachan hit a leadoff

double to left, Matt Deaner and Carter Wallace walked, and with two

out, Hauck doubled.

Kyle Walker shut down the Giants in the bottom of the seventh,

getting two strikeouts in the process.
