Here are some items the Planning Commission considered Monday:

STATE PROPERTY REZONING

The zoning of a 5-acre piece of state-owned property should be

reduced from high-density to medium-density residential, the

commission agreed. The state is looking to sell the parcel, which is

at the Fairview Developmental Center on Harbor Boulevard. A previous

City Council wanted to give the land public/institutional zoning to

encourage more public uses such as recreational space in the city,

but the state opposed that change because it would significantly

reduce the property’s sale value.

The commission voted to recommend that the City Council change the

property from high to medium density -- a reduction that would allow

up to 60 units per acre rather than 100 units. State officials have

said they prefer medium density to public/institutional zoning, which

would not allow residential development.

WHAT IT MEANS

The rezoning decision will now go to the City Council for

consideration.

ELDER CARE FACILITY

The commission rejected a request to build a 16-bed

assisted-living home on East 23rd Street because members thought it

wouldn’t be compatible with the surrounding residential neighborhood.

The applicant planned a 5,370-square-foot facility that would have

employed three or four caretakers and a registered nurse.

WHAT IT MEANS

The assisted living home will not be built.
