Police nab accused vehicle burglars
Police caught two suspected car burglars in the act Friday
afternoon in the parking lot of the Aliso Creek Inn on South Coast
Highway, police said.
After reports of car burglaries in the area over the last six
months, police went to Aliso Creek Inn at 3:30 p.m. Friday with
several unmarked and marked police units, police said.
Officers in an unmarked car noticed two men standing near a car in
the parking lot and recognized the men from previous surveillance
videos, police said. Inn staff had reportedly seen the men tampering
with locks and trying car doors in the parking lot, police said.
Fred Ruigomez, 63, of Anaheim and William Hurt, 64, of Newhall
were arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary and burglary on a
previous date, police said.
Longtime volunteer for police dies at 104
The Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its first --
and oldest -- volunteers, Henry (Hank) L. Handy. Handy died March 26
at the age of 104.
He had been a reserve police officer in Pasadena, and after moving
to Laguna Beach was quick to sign up as a volunteer with the Laguna
Beach Police Department when the department launched its volunteer
program in 1994, Capt. Paul Workman said.
Handy logged more than 1,500 hours of service in six years. He
retired from volunteer duty in 2000, when he turned 100. His widow,
Edith, also volunteered with the department.
“He was here until he was almost 100, and we had him stuffing
envelopes,” Workman said.
Handy was also active in the Lawn Bowling Club. Services were held
March 31 at United Methodist Church of Laguna Beach.
