Three Newport Beach police officers received promotions Monday.
Mike Hyams, a 24-year veteran of the department, was promoted from
lieutenant to captain. Hyams transferred from internal affairs to
commander of the detective division.
Mike McDermott, a 25-year veteran, was promoted from sergeant to

Steve Shulman, press information officer for the department, was
promoted from sergeant to lieutenant. Shulman served on the Costa
Mesa Police Department for 11 years before moving to Newport Beach in
1992. Shulman has not been transferred from his current assignment in

Costa Mesa public safety event scheduled
The annual Costa Mesa Public Safety Expo is scheduled for May 15.
Members of the Costa Mesa police and fire departments will conduct
demonstrations and host displays. Specific details of the event have
yet to be announced.
Past events at the expo included extinguishing a live structure
fire, using the Jaws of Life and police K-9 demonstrations. The expo
will include other public-service displays, food and games.
The expo will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the fire station
at 2300 Placentia Ave. in Costa Mesa.
Fire department to reveal remodeled tower
The Costa Mesa Fire Department will hold a dedication ceremony
April 27 for its newly remodeled training tower.
The project modernized the existing training tower with a $350,000
addition, fire officials said. The addition includes apartment-style
rooms, a balcony, different roof surfaces and an automated live-fire
trainer.
It will help simulate real fire conditions in a controlled
environment and will produce only nontoxic smoke, officials said.
The addition was paid for by a grant from Rancho Santiago
Community College District. The district will share use of the
facility for its fire training program.
Costa Mesa police will also use the tower for tactical training.
The dedication is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. April 27 at the fire
station at 2300 Placentia Ave. in Costa Mesa.
