Anteaters win invitational

The UC Irvine women’s tennis team defeated Santa Clara, 4-0, Sunday
to win the eighth annual UCI Spring invitational at Anteater Tennis
Stadium.
The Anteaters (10-8), who defended their Spring invitational
crown, won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to earn the doubles point.
Sophomore Jayme Hu and freshman Lisa Shih won in the No. 3 spot,
while junior Izabela Mijic and freshman Jessica Broadfoot prevailed
at No. 2 for the ‘Eaters.
UCI senior Anna Bentzer won her 15th dual match of the season at
No. 1 singles, topping Janalle Kaloi, 6-4, 6-2.
Senior Hui Leow defeated Catherine Cochrane, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6, in the
No. 3 match to give UCI a 3-0 lead and Hu ended the match with her
4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Kimberly Daniel in the No. 5 slot.
The Anteaters have now won the event four times in its eight-year
history.
VU runners sparkle
* TRACK AND FIELD: Vanguard University junior Jenny Thune won the
1,500 meters and broke Sarah Hall’s school record with a time of 4
minutes, 36.77 seconds at the Point Loma Nazarene track and field
invitational Saturday in San Diego.
Senior Christol McDonald was second in the 1,500 in 4:41.99. Both
she and Thune not only posted personal bests, but their times were
faster than the automatic qualifying standard for the NAIA national
championships.
Junior Matt Meyer and Vanguard senior teammate Brandon Shaw
finished first and second, respectively, in the men’s 1,500. Meyer’s
time was 3:59.14, while Shaw posted a 4:00.67 clocking at the meet
that included six schools.
Meyer and Shaw also combined with Ryan Allen and John Nelson for a
provisional national qualifying mark (7:47.08) in the 4 x 800 relay.
Junior Liz Huipe, an Estancia High product, was second in the
women’s 3,000 in a personal-best 10:26.
Laura Bowman was sixth in the 3,000 in 10:36 for Coach Bryan
Wilkins’ Lions.
