Underground rupture causes road closures
An underground water vein ruptured in Newport Coast early Sunday,
causing northbound lanes of Newport Coast Drive between San Joaquin
Hills Road and the Corona del Mar Freeway to be closed.
According to Sgt. Mark Everton of the Newport Beach Police
Department, a large sinkhole is forming, and the Irvine Ranch Water
District won’t be able to start fixing it until this morning. Their
preliminary assessment was that the road will be closed at least
until Tuesday night, he said. The sinkhole is near Sage Hill High
School, which is closed for spring break this week.
