UCI claims crown

The UC Irvine men and the Cornell women captured the team titles of
the Spring Break Collegiate Classic in track and field at Anteater
Stadium Saturday.
The UCI men’s squad scored 257 points, Cornell was second with
228, Miami (Ohio) had 223, Cal Poly Pomona 136 and UC Riverside 99.
UCI sealed the victory with a win in the 1,600-meter relay as
Scott Jarvis, Omar Lopez, Storm Huie and Dayne Comrie finished with a
time of 3:14.72. The Anteaters’ Kenny Vinh and Jarvis finished 1-2 in
the 110 hurdles with times of 14.90 and 15.05, respectively. UCI’s
Comrie won the 400 hurdles in 53.17 and Jarvis was second in 53.66.
Huie placed first in the 400 with a time of 48.80 while Ricky Barnes
finished second in the 1,500 meters with a NCAA regional qualifying
time of 3:46.87. Elias Moreno placed second in the 100 meters with a
time of 11.02.
The Anteaters’ John Wratten won the high jump with a
regional-qualifying mark of 6-10 3/4 and Joe Lourenco finished first
in the long jump at 23-0 1/2 . Kirsten Loftin won the pole vault at
11-5 3/4 .
Newport takes fifth
* SOFTBALL: The Newport Harbor High softball team defeated Corona
del Mar, 3-1, and Capistrano Valley, 8-6, Saturday to claim
fifth-place in the Northwood tournament.
Senior pitcher Ashley Gleason went the distance against CdM and
entered midway through the Capo game, finishing the day with 16
strikeouts.
Senior Julianne Bass nailed a solo home run against CdM for the
Sailors (9-2), while going 2 for 4 against Capo with two runs and an
RBI. Darci Pennington was 2 for 3 at the plate against Capistrano
Valley, with a run scored and an RBI.
Michelle Tolfa struck out 12 batters for the Sea Kings.
