CdM goes distance

Corona del Mar High’s boys volleyball team used five games to sneak
by visiting Woodbridge, 25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 24-26, 15-13, in a
nonleague match Wednesday.
The Sea Kings (3-0) were up, 23-19, in the fourth game, but gave
up a couple of unforced errors and Woodbridge (0-1) ended up stealing
it. Playing catch up in the fifth game, CdM tied it at 13 and went
ahead from there for the match win.
Sophomore Adam Smith had 20 kills and 16 digs, while freshman Gus
Ellis had eight kills and 11 blocks. Senior setter Grant Almquist had
36 assists and 12 digs.
CdM opens play in the Francis Parker tournament at 3 p.m. Friday
at Eastlake High.
Mesa downs Valley
* VOLLEYBALL: The Costa Mesa High boys volleyball team won its
second match of the season in as many starts against visiting Santa
Ana Valley in nonleague action Wednesday, 25-22, 25-15, 22-25, 25-14.
Freshman Andrew Melcer led in assists for Costa Mesa with 42.
Sophomore Garrett Walthers chipped in with 14 kills and eight stuff
blocks, and freshman Ryan Bagwell ended with 15 kills and seven
service aces.
The Mustangs will visit Rancho Alamitos on Friday in nonleague
play.
T-wolves too much
* TENNIS: Senior Tristan Cordier won two of his three sets and
lost the third in a tiebreaker, but the visiting Sage Hill School
boys tennis team proved no match for Northwood, which won, 15-3, in a
nonleague meeting Wednesday.
Cordier won his first two sets, 7-6, 6-1, and lost his third, 7-5,
at No. 1 singles for the Lightning (2-4). Northwood (3-2), ranked No.
9 in CIF Southern Section Division I, swept in all three doubles
matchups.
Sage hosts Edison at 3 p.m Friday.
Eagles crash
* VOLLEYBALL: The defending CIF Southern Section Division III
champion Estancia High boys volleyball team lost for the first time
in nearly two years (aside from tournaments) to host Fountain Valley,
25-21, 21-25, 25-21, 25-21, in a nonleague match Wednesday.
The Eagles (1-1), who were 17-0 last season in league and CIF
play, won the second game to tie the match but then lost the next
three.
Junior brothers Scott and Shaun Markley both had 10 kills and 11
digs to lead Estancia, ranked No. 3 in Division III, while junior
Dallas Kopp recorded nine kills. Setter Trevor Holmes had 25 assists
and three aces and Ian Lamb had one ace.
The Eagles open play in the Foothill tournament at 8 a.m. Saturday
at Foothill High.
Lions lose twice
* SOFTBALL: The Vanguard softball team fell in back-to-back games
to the visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills on Wednesday.
In the first game, Dominguez Hills (12-4) scored in the first
inning to put them up, 1-0. In the fifth, Vanguard’s Noelle Navarette
singled, and was brought home off a hit by Lauren Manriquez, which
tied the score at one.
In the seventh inning, Dominguez Hills pulled away after getting 4
runs off two Vanguard errors.
Vanguard’s (3-11) Lindsey Dyer scored one final run in the seventh
inning but it wasn’t enough to match Dominguez Hills, and the game
ended, 5-2.
In the second game, both teams were scoreless until a run by
Dominguez Hills in the sixth inning by Lori Moreno. Vanguard had four
hits in the second game, but was unable to score, and was defeated,
1-0.

Vanguard swept
* SOFTBALL: The visiting Vanguard University softball team gave up
two runs in two games, losing both, 1-0, in a Golden State Athletic
Conference doubleheader Tuesday.
Biola (18-0, 2-0 in the GSAC) scored one unearned run in the top
of the third inning and held on to win the first game. In the second
game, Biola’s Joanna Gray singled in Stacey Duncan in the first
inning for the 1-0 lead.
Vanguard (3-9, 1-3) had five hits in the second game, but stranded
seven runners, including three in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Lions compiled three hits in the first game.
