The city of Huntington Beach’s 2005 Junior Lifeguard Program will be
holding tryouts this May.
Open to boys and girls ages 9 to 17, this program teaches ocean
and beach safety, lifesaving techniques and procedures for safe body
boarding, bodysurfing, board surfing, development of swimming skills,
competitions with other Junior Lifeguard programs, volleyball and
miscellaneous beach games, activities, field trips and ecology.
The purpose of the Junior Lifeguard Program is to acquaint youth
with the experience of ocean swimming and its hazards. This summer
program will run Monday through Friday from June 27 to Aug. 18. There
are two sessions each day: from 8:30 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4:30
p.m.
Applicants for the Junior Lifeguard Program must possess a basic
swimming ability. Tryouts will consist of several prerequisite exams:
applicants must be able to swim 100 yards in less than 1:50, tread
water for 5 minutes and swim underwater for approximately 10 yards.
The tryouts will be held at the Fountain Valley High School pool,
which is between Talbert and Slater avenues on Bushard Street.
Tryouts will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on May 7, 14, 21 and 22.
After the swim tests have been successfully completed, applicants
can register for the program. Returning Junior Guards may register by
returning the forms mailed to the previous year’s participants.
New applicants must register and receive their new uniforms at the
Junior Lifeguard Headquarters on the weekends of June 4 and 5 or June
11 and 12 from 8 a.m. to noon. Proof of age is required to register.
The fee for the program is $475 for Huntington Beach residents,
and $515 for nonresidents. It includes a beach parking pass,
T-shirt, sweatshirt, hat, backpack, patches and several field trips
and events. Costs for group photos, swimsuits and rash guards are not
included.
