Morton paces Anteater men

UC Irvine senior Brian Morton won in singles and doubles to lead the
Anteaters to a 4-3 nonconference men’s tennis win over host Furman
Friday in Greenville, S.C.
Morton, a Corona del Mar High product who grew up playing at Mesa
Verde Tennis Club in Costa Mesa, defeated Allen Simmons, 6-4, 6-4, at
No. 1 singles. Morton then teamed with senior Rye Kashiwabara to win
at No.1 doubles, 8-5.
Peter Surapol, Mustafa Ulukan and Olof Sjorlund also earned
singles victories for the ‘Eaters (4-4).
Keligian advances
* WRESTLING: Corona del Mar High 215-pound wrestler Andrew
Keligian advanced to the second day of the CIF Southern Section
Masters meet at Fountain Valley High Friday.
Keligian defeated Eric Soto from Bell Gardens, 6-2 in his second
match, rebounding from a 6-5 loss in his opening match against Steve
Castro from Alta Loma.
The top eight wrestlers from each weight class advance to the
state tournament March 4-5 in Bakersfield. Keligian must win three
matches today in order to break into the top eight. The consolation
round begins at 9 a.m. and Keligian is expected to wrestle sometime
between 10 and 11.
CdM’s Brian Feeley withdrew from the Masters meet because he tore
the meniscus in his left knee in last week’s divisional third-place
match -- which he eventually won 5-2.
Coast men sweep
* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College men’s tennis team blanked
visiting Cypress, 9-0, in Orange Empire Conference play Friday.
In No. 1 singles, Jared Haley swept his opponent, 6-0, 6-0, while
Spencer Soloman, Scott Fielder, Victor Jacobs, Shawn Maguire and
Fernando Jota all defeated their opponents.
The doubles teams of Haley-Soloman and Fielder-Maguire both won.
OCC (4-1, 2-1 in the OEC) hosts Fullerton 2 p.m. Tuesday.
OCC women advance
* TENNIS: Six Orange Coast College women’s tennis players won in
the round of 16 at the Southwestern individual tournament Friday in
Chula Vista, and advance to the quarterfinals today at 9 a.m.
Jessica Rice, Michelle Esquivel, Julie Haley, Ai Takamori and
Rachael Sessum defeated their opponents -- from various junior
colleges in Southern California -- while Emily Paulson had a bye.
The doubles teams of Esquivel-Rice, Paulson-Sessum and
Haley-Takamori also advanced to the quarterfinals today. The semis
will follow at 11 a.m.
UCI still in first
* SWIMMING AND DIVING: The UC Irvine women’s swimming and diving
team increased its lead to 55 points at the Big West Championships at
Belmont Plaza in Long Beach Friday. The Anteater men are currently in
third place.
Freshman Chelsea Nagata won the 100 fly Big West Championship with
a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 53.54. Nagata took second in the
100 back with her third UCI record of the meet with a time of 55.84.
Sophomore Aubrie Smallwood broke the UCI record with her prelim time
of 1:04.06 in the 100 breast, finishing fourth in the finals. The 400
medley relay of Chelsea Nagata, Aubrie Smallwood, Ashley DePaul and
Katina Economides broke the UCI record with their fourth place time
of 3:47.88.
The UCI women will look to capture the first Big West Swimming and
Diving Championship in UCI history Saturday with finals beginning at
6 p.m.
VU handles Azusa
* TENNIS: The host Vanguard University women’s tennis team
outmatched Azusa Pacific, 7-2, to still remain undefeated on the
season.
Olga Hlushchanka, Jenny Edner, Amy Brown and Olivia Amstad all won
their singles sets for the Lions (7-0, 5-0 in the GSAC). All three
Vanguard doubles teams -- Hlushchanka-Brown, Edner-Damia Donkervoort
and Alena Votavova-Olivia Amstad -- won their sets.
Vanguard visits Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego at 1 p.m. today.
Crouch drives Lions
* BASEBALL: Vanguard University, returning from a three-game road
trip, beat California Baptist, 8-7 in a Golden State Athletic
Conference matchup.
The Lions put together 10 hits in the victory, including Nik
Crouch’s two homeruns.
Crouch hit a two-run blast to left field in the first inning, and
his two-run homer to right in the seventh gave Vanguard a 7-5 lead.
Vanguard improves to 4-7 and 1-2 in the conference while Cal
Baptist falls to 3-4-1 and 0-1. The two clubs will play a
doubleheader today at 11 a.m. at Cal Baptist.

Errors cost ‘Eaters
* BASEBALL: A pair of errors allowed Clemson to score the
game-winning unearned run in the eighth inning of a 3-2 nonconference
baseball victory Friday over visiting UC Irvine.
Brad Chalk reached on a leadoff walk in the eighth against UCI
reliever Nash Robertson, who threw wildly to second after fielding a
subsequent bunt. Chalk went to third on Robertson’s error, then
scored when center fielder Erik Johnson’s throw to the infield was
wild.
UCI (6-3), ranked No. 18 by Baseball America, had tied it in the
eighth on back-to-back doubles by junior catcher Mark Wagner and
junior third baseman Matt Anderson.
Wagner, who was 2 for 4, drove in the first UCI run in the first.
Anderson was 3 for 4, as the Anteaters had seven hits to the
Tigers’ six.
UCI starter Chris Nicoll surrendered two runs on six hits in 4 2/3
innings.
Robertson pitched 2 2/3 innings of no-hit relief and Blair
Erickson closed the game with 2/3 of an inning without allowing a
hit.
UCI had four errors.
The game, before 3,748, was the home opener for Clemson (2-2).
The two teams are scheduled to resume their three-game series
today.

Comeback falls short
* BASEBALL: The Orange Coast College baseball team had the tying
runs on second and third in the eighth inning but failed to drive
them home in the team’s 6-2 nonconference loss at Cuesta College in
San Luis Obispo Friday.
The Cougars took a 4-0 lead, but OCC’s Luke Beck singled in Matt
Cline, Robbie Blauer scoring on Stephen Schneider’s single.
Beck and Blauer were sacrificed to third and second bases, but the
Pirates were not able to bring either one across the plate.
OCC, which falls to 6-4, plays a doubleheader against Cuesta,
which improves to 3-2, starting today at 10 a.m.

UCI losses on the road
* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team lost, 30-25,
27-30, 22-20, 26-30, at BYU in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation
match Friday.
The Anteaters (6-10, 4-7 in the federation) were led by Steffan
Rangel’s 12 kills. Brian Thornton added 41 assists for the
11th-ranked ‘Eaters.
Ivan Perez had a match-high 14 kills for BYU (7-6, 2-4). The
seventh-ranked Cougars received 49 assists from Rob Neilson.
UCI will play a rematch against BYU today at 7 p.m.
Azusa outmatches VU
* TENNIS: The Vanguard University men’s tennis team lost to
visiting Azusa Pacific, 7-2, in Golden State Athletic Conference
action Friday.
Andreas Reckziegel defeated Adam Davidson, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, for
Vanguard (2-1, 1-1 in the GSAC), while Christoph Schramm accounted
for the Lions’ other win, a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 victory over Gordon Hong.
Vanguard visits Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego at 1 p.m. today.
UCI’s Bentzer honored
* TENNIS: UC Irvine senior Anna Bentzer has been named Big West
Conference Co-Player of the Week in women’s tennis.
Bentzer, playing No. 1 singles, defeated Marielle Gruenig, 6-1,
6-4, to help lead a 4-2 Big West victory over UC Santa Barbara Feb.
19.
She also defeated Silvia Gutierrez, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, to help UCI
earn a 4-3 conference win over Cal State Northridge Feb. 15.
Lightning boys honored
* SOCCER: Academy League boys soccer coaches placed four Sage Hill
School players on the first-team All-Academy League squad and three
players on the second team.
Alex Edelstein, Braden Ross, Conrad Whitaker and junior Zach
Milder were named first-team All-Academy League.
Sophomores Tyler Ellis, Richard Gadbois and freshman Beau
Caillouette were named to the second team.
