A good act for Act V
There has been a remarkable series of breakthroughs this month toward
a solution and compromise concerning the future of the Corporate Yard
and Act V. That news alone should bring cheers enough to last a
while.
But even better than that are the details and the desire to bridge
disagreements evident at a community workshop on the issue.
Councilwoman Tony Iseman, who in the days before the workshop said
the move would keep the city from solving its biggest problem --
parking -- said after the meeting: “We broke the log jam that had
been causing the problems for years.â€
And on Wednesday, Iseman and Mayor Elizabeth Pearson-Schneider
announced that they’d reached agreement on eight more points.
“Now we are going to make it happen,†Pearson-Schneider said.
As reported in the Coastline Pilot, points of the compromise
include:
* A reduced footprint of the Maintenance Yard portion of the Act V
build-out.
* Have multiple peripheral parking locations, at the north and
south ends of town.
* Parking spaces at the Village Entrance could number less than
650.
* Parking and shuttle stop at Act V made easily recognizable.
* Moving the vehicles from Act V to another location during summer
would be an option. For example, the school district bus parking lot.
* Eliminate one building proposed at Act V and the trim the
footprint of the remaining building.
* Keep approximately 255 parking spaces at Act V for peripheral
parking.
* If the footprint of the maintenance yard at Act V is reduced in
the back, the fuel modification zone would be reduced and less of an
issue.
* It would be OK to have the fuel station at Act V, if the city
can also get 250 parking spaces on the site. Possibilities to
explore: widening the sides in front parking area and valet parking.
As everyone who has followed this decade-long battle knows, one
log jam broken does not mean the river will flow unimpeded forever.
But the signs are indeed encouraging.
