Estancia boys remain on fire

Estancia High’s boys basketball team won its eighth straight game and
maintained a perfect record in Golden West League play following a
64-51 victory over visiting Orange Tuesday night.
Senior Carlos Pinto tallied a game-high 20 points, including four
three-pointers, while Rafael Montillo scored a career-best 16 points
off the bench.
Montillo added five offensive rebounds while the Eagles (17-4, 7-0
in league), who let a 16-point halftime lead dwindle to two in the
third quarter, converted 18 of 19 from the free-throw line (94.7%) to
help pull away in the fourth period.

Vanguard toppled
* BASKETBALL: A few hours after the Vanguard University women’s
basketball team moved up to the No. 1 ranking in the NAIA, the Lions
lost at the buzzer to visiting 12th-ranked Azusa Pacific, 81-80,
Tuesday night in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at The Pit.
Azusa’s Lindsey West released her shot just before the buzzer and
it bounced three times on the rim before falling through to give the
Cougars (16-5, 8-2 in the GSAC) the upset and hand Vanguard (18-2,
9-1) its first conference loss.
UCI sweeps Princeton
* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team won its third
match this season by sweeping visiting Princeton, 30-25, 30-22,
30-18, in a nonconference match Tuesday at Crawford Court.
Jon Stellar had a match-high 14 kills for the Anteaters (3-5),
while Paul Spittle slammed home 12 kills. Aaron Harrell added eight
kills and David Smith had seven.
Mesa ousts Saints
* SOCCER: Two goals from senior Jenny Sparks and one from junior
Kyla Flores sparked a 3-0 win for the Costa Mesa High girls soccer
team Tuesday against host Santa Ana in Golden West League play.
Sparks’ first goal came in the fourth minute, Flores’ was in the
34th minute and Sparks’ second goal was in the 45th, as the Mustangs
improved to 13-2, 8-0 in league.
Bench lifts Mustangs
* BASKETBALL: The bench scored 33 points to help the Costa Mesa
High boys basketball team beat host Westminster, 68-39, Tuesday in a
Golden West League contest.
The Mustangs came out flat in the first quarter, still feeling the
effects of Friday’s buzzer-beating loss at the hands of Estancia.
Larry Puente scored seven of his 11 points and William Lefebvre
scored six of his nine in the second quarter for Costa Mesa (12-8,
6-1 in league). Scott Knox scored a game-high 14 for the Mustangs.
Ball reaches next round
* TENNIS: Corona del Mar High senior Carsten Ball reached the
round of 16 in the Australian Open junior tournament with an upset
victory Tuesday at the Melbourne Park National Tennis Centre in
Melbourne, Australia. Ball defeated No. 5 seed Chu-Huan YI of Taipei,
6-4, 7-5, one of three seeded players defeated in the round.
Tars handle Foothill
* SOCCER: All it took was one quick goal in the sixth minute and
the Newport Harbor High girls soccer team held on to defeat visiting
Foothill, 1-0, in Sea View League play Tuesday.
Senior Julia Bernay took a cross from Stephanie Lambrakis and
kicked the ball directly through Kiley Hall’s legs and into
Foothill’s goal for the quick Newport lead.
CdM seeks coach
* TRACK AND FIELD: Corona del Mar High is seeking assistant track
and field coach, especially a throws and jump coach.

Titans too much
* WRESTLING: The visiting Tesoro High wrestling team pinned four
Corona del Mar wrestlers and went on to take the match, 42-29, in
Pacific Coast League action Tuesday.
Sophomore Jermey Hyter, wrestling in the 215-pound weight class
for CdM (3-11, 0-3 in league), pinned his opponent 45 seconds into
the first period. Heavyweight senior Robey Richey also pinned his
opponent, this one 1:15 into the second period.
Brian Feeley (135) defeated his opponent, 5-2, Matt Loeb (140)
won, 16-4, and John Dean (160) won, 13-0, for the Sea Kings, who
travel to University Thursday at 6 p.m.
CdM stumbles in 4th
* BASKETBALL: The Corona del Mar High girls basketball team had a
36-33 lead entering the fourth quarter but couldn’t hang on, losing
to host Tesoro, 47-42, in a Sea View League game Tuesday.
Junior Megan Benbow had a game-high 12 points along with eight
rebounds for the Sea Kings, while junior Kristina Wayte chipped in 11
points. Katie Schulte, who averaged 18.6 points over the last seven
games, was held to eight against the Titans.
Newport loses in OT
* BASKETBALL: Vanessa Miller made a three-pointer with two seconds
remaining in regulation for the Newport Harbor High girls basketball
team against visiting Foothill to send the Sea View League game into
overtime, but the Knights pulled away in the extra frame for the
53-48 victory.
Ivy Melo had four steals and drew three charging fouls on defense
for Newport Harbor (10-12, 1-5 in league). Sophomore Kristi Bodkin
contributed seven rebounds and nine points for the Sailors. Miller’s
15 led Newport.
Azusa tames Lions
* BASKETBALL: The Vanguard University men’s basketball team lost
to visiting Azusa Pacific, 72-61, in a Golden State Athletic
Conference game Tuesday at The Pit.
The Lions (8-11, 3-7 in the GSAC) shot 50% from the free-throw
line and Azusa Pacific (16-5, 8-2) had eight steals to the Lions’ one
steal.
Levi Seekins had a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds for
Vanguard, while Brian Kim and Brian Roberts each added 14 points.
