Sophomore Melissa Buchmann scored three of her team-high six goals in
the second quarter to help the Estancia High girls water polo team
claim its fourth straight victory following a 15-1 nonleague decision
over visiting Magnolia Monday.
Courtney Hess scored four times while Chelsea Kaplan and Carolina
Barnes each tallied two goals for the Eagles (12-9, 1-2 in the Golden
West League).
Katie Mahan made seven saves in goal and then scored one goal
while in the field in the second half. Kaplan stopped one shot.
The Eagles host league foe Saddleback at 3:15 Wednesday.

Team USA starts strong
* WATER POLO: The United States junior women’s water polo team,
which features Corona del Mar High standout Christina Hewko, started
the FINA Junior Women’s World Championships with a 9-8 win over
Hungary in the first round of pool play Monday at Challenge Stadium
in Perth, Australia.
Team USA, which finished second to Canada at the 2003 junior
worlds, will take on China today in the second of three contests in
the Group A pool.
Ducks roll over ‘Eaters
* TENNIS: The University of Oregon women’s tennis team remained
undefeated after a 6-1 nonconference victory over visiting UC Irvine
Sunday on the Ducks’ campus in Eugene, Ore.
UCI’s Jessica Ruth defeated Monica Hoz de Vila, 6-1, 6-3, for the
Anteaters’ (1-2) lone victory.
