Remembering ‘King’

Students and staff of all ages and nationalities participated in a

rally and march Thursday to support the teachings of Martin Luther

King Jr.

Nearly 50 students converged at the Student Center to listen to

professor Thomas Parham speak on racial tolerance and on adapting

King’s message to a modern society. They later marched a half-mile

around Ring Road, carrying signs and chanting messages of peace.

* Mariners Christian School board members declined to tell more

than 300 parents and teachers why popular headmistress Mary Letterman

was relieved of her duties earlier this month.

In a town hall meeting Thursday, trustees fielded questions

ranging from the school’s search for new leadership to questions of

their own legitimacy as overseers of the school.

Board members said they couldn’t provide answers for Letterman’s

departure because of confidentiality reasons and said they hope to

find a new headmaster before the next school year begins in

September.

* More than 300 friends and colleagues attended a Wednesday

memorial in honor of former Newport-Mesa teacher’s union president

and journalism teacher Linda Mook.

Mook was recognized at Corona del Mar High School, where she spent

27 years teaching journalism. She later headed the local union, the

Newport-Mesa Federation of Teachers, and became an educational issues

coordinator for the California Federation of Teachers.

Her co-workers remembered her as a calming influence and mentor.

She died Dec. 30 at 62, and was buried in Missouri.
