Agassi knocks off Dent

Corona del Mar High product Taylor Dent fell to eighth-seeded Andre

Agassi, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, in the third round of men’s singles play

at the Australian Open Friday in Melbourne.

Agassi has won the event four times, including three of the last

five years.

The 23-year-old Dent defeated both Florent Serra and Michal Tabara

in straight sets in the first and second rounds, respectively, before

bowing out to Agassi.

Tars improve to 4-1

* BASKETBALL: Tony Yaghjian and Taylor Young were perfect from the

free-throw line in the final two minutes as the Newport Harbor High

boys basketball team held on to defeat host Woodbridge, 56-47, Friday

in Sea View League action.

Yaghjian was 4 of 4 from the line and Young was 2 of 2 in the

final two minutes when Woodbridge was forced to foul. Junior Dennis

Heenan hit a three-pointer with less than two minutes remaining to

give the Sailors (12-8, 4-1 in league) a seven-point lead.

Young finished with a game-high 17 points, while senior Brett

Perrine added 14.

Kenezevic wins it

* SOCCER: Junior Paul Kenezevic scored the game-winning goal in

the 60th minute off of a corner kick from senior Grant Almquist to

give the Corona del Mar High boys soccer team a 3-2 Pacific Coast

League win against visiting Laguna Beach Friday.

The Sea Kings (9-4-2, 4-0 in league) jumped out to a quick 2-0

lead with goals from Allan Hardison in the first minute and Nick

Ossipoff in the 10th, but the Breakers fought back and tied it in the

47th minute.

Almquist finished with two assists, while Brian Burke finished

with one for the Sea Kings, who visit Tesoro Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

Sage tallies five

* SOCCER: Zack Milder scored two goals and the Sage Hill School

boys soccer team defeated visiting Whitney, 5-0, in an Academy League

game Friday.

The Lightning improved to 4-7-1, 4-1 in league with the three

other goals from Sam Fankuchen, Tyler Ellis and Braden Ross. Milder

tallied his first goal in the fourth minute and his last one in the

79th minute.

Sage visits league-unbeaten Oxford Academy Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Lightning streaking

* SOCCER: The Sage Hill School girls soccer team still remains

unbeaten after a 3-0 Academy League win against visiting Whitney

Friday.

Sage improved to 13-0-1, 3-0-1 in league and shares the top

Academy League spot with St. Margaret’s. Both teams played to a tie

earlier this season.

Senior Amy Werblin score the Lightning’s first goal off of an

assist from freshman Kellee Kim in the 19th minute. Colleen Heyler

scored in the 67th minute and Kim added a goal of her own two minutes

later.

Sage hosts Oxford Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Sage tied for first

* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School girls basketball team entered

into a three-way tie for first place in the Academy League after a

59-44 league win against host Whitney Friday.

Junior Haywood Wright had 14 points for the Lightning while also

pulling down a game-high 17 rebounds. Senior Katie Puishys had 24

points and 13 rebounds.

Freshman Katie McKeon held Whitney’s Rachael Ny, the league’s

leading scorer, to just seven points in the first half.

* SOCCER: The Estancia High boy soccer team defeated host Orange,

1-0, in a Golden West League game Friday.

Senior Angel Cirilo scored the lone goal of the game in the 33rd

minute off of a pass from junior Pedro Duarte. Junior Marco Burciaga

finished with four saves in goal for the Eagles (4-5-1, 4-3 in

league), while Duarte took three shots on Orange’s goal.

Estancia hosts Ocean View Friday at 3 p.m. at Balearic Park.

Lightning stop Whitney

* BASKETBALL: Senior Matt Loper scored a game-high 17 points while

Jamie McGee tallied 16 to help the visiting Sage Hill School boys

basketball team earn a 52-46 Academy League victory over Whitney

Friday night.

McGee scored 12 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter while Mike

Voge, who scored five points, drew a key charge in the period. Jordan

Ogron added nine points for Sage (15-6, 2-3 in league). Whitney fell

to 7-9, 1-4.

* VOLLEYBALL: Sean Rooney tallied match highs in kills (20) and

service aces (five) to lead visiting Pepperdine University to a

30-22, 28-30, 30-24, 30-27 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory

over UC Irvine Friday night in the Bren Events Center.

UCI (2-5, 1-2 in the MPSF) had four players finish in double

figures in kills, but it was not enough against the Waves (3-1, 3-1).

Jon Steller and Jayson Jablonsky each slammed 14 kills while Paul

Spittle and David Smith powered 13 and 11 kills, respectively, for

the Anteaters. Brian Thornton added 52 assists for the hosts.

Orange Coast topped

* BASKETBALL: The Orange Coast College men’s basketball team fell

to visiting Golden West, 79-68, in an Orange Empire Conference game

Friday.

Coast’s Dave Seifert tied a game-high 18 points with Golden West’s

Jontae Vinson, but the Pirates (10-9, 1-5 in the OEC) shot 35.3% from

the field to Golden West’s 54.3%.

The Pirates were also outrebounded, 45-32.

loss following a 64-55 Orange Empire Conference women’s basketball

victory Friday.

Coast (12-9, 2-4 in conference) shot 35.7% from the field (20 of

56) while going 13 of 17 from the free-throw line (76.5%). Sophomore

Rhondi Naff tallied a game-high 23 points while Lauren Stepanski

added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Pirates.

Schraeder in doubt

* BASKETBALL: Tests Friday confirmed UC Irvine junior guard Ross

Schraeder sustained a nasal fracture late in the second half of

Thursday night’s 78-58 Big West Conference victory over Long Beach

State.

Schraeder’s status for the Anteaters’ next game, a nonconference

matchup Monday at UC Davis, and subsequent contests, remains in

question.

Dr. Brian Wong, who examined the Anteaters’ leading three-point

shooter -- Schraeder has 41 through 14 games this season -- will

follow-up throughout the weekend and determine playing status and

what type of protection may be needed.

“Our primary goal is to ensure a full recovery for Ross,” UCI

Coach Pat Douglass said.
