Eagles win sixth straight

Carlos Pinto rang up a game-high 30 points to lead the Estancia High
boys basketball team to a 70-57 victory over visiting Santa Ana
Wednesday in a Golden West League contest. It was the sixth straight
win for Estancia.
Shaun Markley added 12 points for Estancia (15-4, 5-0 in league)
to equal a season-high.
Estancia plays host to crosstown rival Costa Mesa Friday at 7 p.m.
in a matchup of league unbeatens.
Sailors rising of late
* BASKETBALL: The Newport Harbor High boys basketball team
maintained control from tipoff to the final buzzer as the Sailors
defeated visiting Laguna Hills, 66-51, Wednesday in a Sea View League
contest. Taylor Young had a game-high 22 points with five steals for
Newport Harbor (11-8, 3-1 in league).
Defense lifts Mesa
* BASKETBALL: The visiting Costa Mesa High boys basketball team
held Orange scoreless for the first 4 1/2 minutes of the fourth
quarter to post a 61-47 victory Wednesday in a Golden West League
contest.
Scott Knox had a game-high 23 points for Costa Mesa (11-7, 5-0 in
league).
Newport handles Aliso
* WATER POLO: Juniors Leah Robertson and Calli Manderino each
registered a hat trick to lead the Newport Harbor High girls water
polo team to a 17-2 Sea View League victory over host Aliso Niguel
Wednesday.
Senior Anne Belden finished with three steals, three assists and
one goal for the Sailors (15-1, 2-0 in league). Goalkeepers Kendal
Nelson and Elizabeth Layton had three saves each for Newport Harbor.
Sea Kings cruise to win
* WATER POLO: Camille Hewko scored a hat trick and Jordan Anae
added two more to lead the Corona del Mar High girls water polo team
to a 10-3 victory over visiting Northwood Wednesday in a Pacific
Coast League contest.
CdM, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division II, took an 8-0
lead with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Hewko also had four steals for the Sea Kings (11-5, 1-0 in
league).
Bowman powers Mesa
* WATER POLO: Sarah Bowman’s game-high seven goals powered the
Costa Mesa High girls water polo team to an 18-2 Golden West League
victory over Ocean View Wednesday at Estancia High.
The Mustang defense held Ocean View to seven shots on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Gentling finished with five saves for
Costa Mesa (14-5, 4-0 in league).
Ortiz lifts Orange Coast
* BASKETBALL: Lance Ortiz continued his outstanding play of late,
scoring 20 points to lead the Orange Coast College men’s basketball
team to a 77-61 victory over host Cypress Wednesday night in an
Orange Empire Conference game. OCC (9-9, 1-4 in conference) plays
host to Golden West College Friday at 5:30 p.m.
Ortiz, the team’s leading scorer, has averaged 23.7 points in the
last five games for the Pirates, all conference contests.
CdM falls just short
* BASKETBALL: Despite a valiant come-from-behind effort, the
Corona del Mar High boys basketball team lost to visiting Northwood,
62-58, Wednesday in a Pacific Coast League contest.
Four different Sea Kings connected from three-point land,
including Brett Hirata’s game-high three from beyond the arc. Hirata
and Ryan Lance each had 13 points to pace CdM (7-12, 2-2 in league).
Lions edge Eagles late
* WATER POLO: After trading goals throughout the first three
quarters, the Estancia High girls water polo team lost to host
Westminster, 8-6, in Golden West League play Wednesday at Huntington
Beach High.
Junior Carolina Barnes scored four goals for the Eagles (8-8, 1-2
in league), while Melissa Buchmann added the other two. Goalie Katie
Mahan had 10 saves for the Eagles.
Cypress stops Pirates
* BASKETBALL: Rosalyn Omoruyi scored a game-high 34 points and the
Cypress College women’s basketball team defeated visiting Orange
Coast College, 74-61, in an Orange Empire Conference game Wednesday.
Lauren Stepanksi had 15 points to lead the Pirates (12-8, 2-3 in
the OEC), while Valerie Katayama had 13. Rhondi Naff also chipped in
12 points for Coast.
