The Edison High wrestling team began a busy week of action by
defeating visiting Huntington Beach, 56-21.
The Chargers, who won at Fountain Valley on Jan. 6, are now 2-0 in
league.
They will go after league win No. 3 when they host Marina tonight.
Recording pins for Edison were Garrett Drucker at 119-pounds, Joe
Hirsch (125), Nick Abraham (140), Jimmy Hynes (160), Jake Pinkham
(189), Stephan Holmquist (215) and Romni Fuga (heavyweight).
Brandon Drucker won a majority decision at 135 and Dylan Jensen
was awarded a forfeit.
A day later, the Chargers competed at the Five Counties meet at
Fountain Valley High.
The meet, in its 40th year, annually attracts some of the state’s
top teams and individual wrestlers and is considered the top meet in
the west.
Poway won the tournament.
Edison finished 13th out of 80 schools. Fuga placed third in the
heavyweight division and Jensen placed eighth at 130-pounds.
Hynes and Brandon Drucker both wrestled into the second day of
action on Saturday, before being eliminated.
Huntington Beach resident Bryan Osuna, a student at Calvary Chapel
in Santa Ana, placed third at 125-pounds.
Calvary Chapel finished in ninth-place, overall.
In girls’ soccer action, Edison got past host Huntington Beach,
3-1.
Junior Kaitlin Thulin scored in the opening 10 minutes of the
Sunset League match to send Edison on its way.
Thulin scored off an assist from sophomore Brenna Boies.
Shortly after Thulin’s score, senior Christina Clifford crossed a
long ball to Boies, who then netted Edison’s second goal.
Taking advantage of a free kick at the 18-yard line, Huntington’s
Christina Patrick delivered a goal to narrow the gap to 2-1, at the
half.
Edison junior goalie Amanda Shay had a few big saves in the
opening half and was assisted on defense by senior sweeper Nicole
Lawrence.
The only scoring in the second half came when Clifford scored off
a lateral cross from Boies.
Freshman goalie Cassie Becker recorded the second-half shutout for
Edison.
In an early league showdown played on a mud-soaked field, host
Esperanza would slip and slide past Edison, 4-2.
Slippery playing conditions allowed the Aztecs to score their
first two goals en route to an early, 2-0 lead, and the Chargers took
advantage of a slip by an Esperanza defender to score its first goal.
The Aztecs led at the break, 4-0.
Early in the second half, Edison junior Alex Dunn took a pass from
Christina Clifford and sent a ball into the net after the Esperanza
goalie slipped in the mud.
Ten minutes later, sophomore Corie Maguire connected with Dunn,
who scored Edison’s final goal of the game.
Edison freshman goalie Cassie Becker was not scored on in the
second half.
In another Sunset League match, Huntington Beach earned a 1-1 tie
with visiting Los Alamitos. Ashley Eremita scored a first half goal
for the Oilers.
In Golden West League girls’ soccer, Ocean View picked up two
victories by blanking Orange, 2-0, and edging Westminster, 2-1.
