Cook collects Lion of Week

Vanguard University freshman Melissa Cook, who averaged 17.7 points

and 7.7 rebounds in three recent victories, has been named Lion of

the Week by the school.

Cook had a career-high 26 points against Bethany Dec. 29 in the

Golden State Athletic Conference challenge to help lead the Lions,

ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, to a 120-34 victory.

Later that day she had 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds as

the Lions finished off Oklahoma City.

Cook, a 6-foot guard/forward was named to the all-tournament team.

As the Lions’ sixth man, Cook was averaging 13.1 points and 6.3 points through 15 games.

UCI scrimmages slated

* BASEBALL: The UC Irvine baseball team will hold six more

preseason scrimmages and the public is invited to watch at no charge.

The Anteaters, under first-year coach Dave Serrano, will scrimmage

today at 3:45 p.m., Friday at 5:20 p.m.; Saturday at 1:20 p.m., Jan.

25 at 3:45 p.m., as well as Jan. 28 and 29, both at 3:35 p.m.

The Anteaters open their regular season Feb. 4 with the first of a

three-game series at Cal.

Their home opener is Feb. 11, against Washington.

Newland honored

* WATER POLO: UC Irvine junior Ty Newland has been named a

Mountain Pacific Sports Federation scholar-athlete in men’s water

polo.

Newland, a driver, has a 3.50 grade-point average.

VU alumni game

* BASEBALL: The Vanguard University baseball program will host a

pair of alumni games Saturday.

Former players who competed in 1994 or before will play the Lions

at 11:30 a.m., while players who competed after 1994 will play

first-year coach Scott Mallernee’s squad at 1:30 p.m.

Lunch will be provided for participants during and after the

morning game. Alumni are encouraged to RSVP via e-mail to Mallernee

Admission is free.

Lions’ alumni contest

* SOFTBALL: The Vanguard softball team has scheduled its alumni

game for Jan. 29 at 10 a.m.

Warmups begin at 9 a.m. and a postgame lunch will be provided at

the field.
