Slaughter brothers shine

Brothers Ted and Scott Slaughter got hot in the first quarter and the

Corona del Mar High boys basketball team earned its second Pacific

Coast League victory with a 49-42 triumph over host Calvary Chapel

Friday.

The Sea Kings (7-10, 2-1 in league) used senior Ted Slaughter down

in the post and he banged his way to seven points in the first

quarter and finished with 12.

When Scott Slaughter, a junior, subbed in for his brother, he hit

two three pointers in the first quarter and also finished with 12

points.

Corona del Mar outscored Calvary Chapel, 19-9, in the first

quarter and held on from for the win and the chance to compete for

the top spot in league.

The Sea Kings host Northwood at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Tooma leads Lightning

* WATER POLO: Devin Tooma tallied three goals to help the Sage

Hill School girls water polo team defeat Estancia, 6-4, for the

second time this season in a nonleague game Friday at Corona del Mar

High.

Kathryn Bishop made a point-blank save -- one of five in the game

-- to start the counterattack that led to Tooma’s goal, which was

assisted by Elle White. Karly Bennet, Whitney Gaglio and White each

added goals for Sage (8-10) while Melissa Buchmann powered the Eagles

with two goals.

Courtney Hess and Jessica Kasper both tallied single goals for the

Eagles while goalkeeper Katie Mahan made eight saves.

Estancia boys soar

* SOCCER: The Estancia High boys soccer team improved its Golden

West League record to 2-1 after a 2-1 win over host Santa Ana Friday.

The Eagles (3-5-1) trailed, 1-0, after a half of play, but came

out in the second half and fired in two goals. Senior captain Geo

Macias heaved a throw-in all the way to the penalty box and after

bouncing off of a couple of players, Angel Cirilo drilled it in.

In the 70th minute, senior Rafael Hernandez drew a foul on the

18-yard line, and Cesar Gonzalez took the kick, sending it to the

top, left corner of the goal for the go-ahead score.

Macias and sophomore Alex Salguero, who shut down a marquee Santa

Ana player, led the Estancia defense.

CdM moves to 2-0

* SOCCER: Four different players scored a goal in the Corona del

Mar High boys soccer team’s 4-0 Sea View League victory over host

Calvary Chapel Friday.

Senior Murphy Megonagal scored in the 10th minute for the Sea

Kings (7-4-2, 2-0 in league) off of an assist from Allan Hardison.

Hardison added a goal of his own in the 23rd minute with the assist

dished by Nick Ossipoff.

Casey Flynn and Ajay Sahni scored a goal apiece in the second half

off of assists from Brandon Barrett and Ben Maggard.

Lightning girls win

* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School girls basketball team handed

two-time defending Academy League champion St. Margaret’s a 55-22

home loss in Academy League play Friday.

Junior Rebecca Hembarsky was 6 of 6 from the field and 4 of 5 from

the free-throw line, racking up a game-high 16 points to lead the

Lightning (6-7, 2-1 in league).

Haywood Wright, a 6-foot-2 junior, added 10 points and pulled down

12 rebounds, while senior Katie Puishys chipped in 12 points in

Sage’s first victory over the Tartans since the Lightning’s inaugural

season.

Sage hosts Capistrano Valley Christian tonight at 6.

Early goals boost Sage

* SOCCER: Zack Milder scored off a pass from Tyler Ellis in the

16th minute and the Sage Hill School boys soccer team held on from

there, tallying its second straight victory with a 2-1 Academy League win over visiting St. Margaret’s Friday.

Braden Ross evened the game at 1 in the 13th minute on an assist

from Richard Gadbois after St. Margaret’s (1-8, 1-1 in league) took

the early lead with a goal in the sixth minute.

Goalkeeper Zach Shockley made seven saves in the first half while

Jimmy O’Hare tallied eight saves in the final 40 minutes for Sage

(2-7-1, 2-1), which hosts Capistrano Valley Christian in a league

game at 3:15 p.m. today.

Sage gets first blemish

* SOCCER: The Sage Hill School girls soccer team earned a tie and

a win against host St. Margaret’s Friday in an Academy League matchup

of top teams.

The Lightning tied St. Margaret’s, 1-1, but it was the first time

in school history that the team hasn’t lost to the Tartans. The tie

gave the Lightning (12-0-1, 2-0-1 in league) their first blemish.

Freshman Kellee Kim scored Sage’s goal in the 52nd minute off a

deflected Amy Werblin shot. St. Margaret’s (7-2-2, 1-0-1) responded in the 68th minute with the tying goal.

Senior Laura Gordon had three saves for the Lightning, who host

Whitney Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Eagle girls clipped

* SOCCER: Numerous shots were taken on the opposers’ goal, but the

Estancia High girls soccer team couldn’t get one through, falling to

host Saddleback, 5-0, in Golden West League action Friday.

Saddleback scored right off the bat in the third minute and took a

3-0 halftime lead, which Estancia (5-2-3, 1-1-2 in league) couldn’t

recover from. The Roadrunners then came out in the second half and

fired in two more.

Marci Kirchberg had six saves playing in goal for Estancia.

Pirates go cold late, lose

* BASKETBALL: A 12-0 run that lasted more than five minutes of the

second half helped host Riverside College pull away and win its

fourth straight Orange Empire Conference men’s basketball game with

an 81-69 victory over Orange Coast Friday.

Orange Coast (8-9, 0-4 in the OEC) held a 36-31 halftime edge

before Riverside (9-10, 4-0) caught fire.

Shamont Brown scored 16 of his game-high 24 points in the second

half for the Tigers, who shot 28 of 49 (57.1%) for the game, while

Lance Ortiz paced the Pirates with 20 points and three assists.

Reggie Brown and Matt Davis each added 11 points for Coast.

Sage stumbles early

* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School boys basketball team scored one

point in the first quarter en route to a 38-34 home loss to St.

Margaret’s Friday in Academy League action.

The Lightning (14-5, 1-2 in league) were outscored, 21-5, in the

first half, but made a rally in the second, cutting it to 36-34 with

a minute remaining. But St. Margaret’s took over from there.

Freshman Jamie McGee had a game-high 20 points, all of them coming

in the second half, while senior Matt Loper added nine.

The Lightning host Capistrano Valley Christian tonight at 7:30.

OCC women defeated

* BASKETBALL: Host Riverside City College snapped a two-game

losing streak with a 62-51 Orange Empire Conference victory over

Orange Coast Friday.

Trailing, 34-33, Riverside went on a 20-6 run over a six-minute

span to gain control of the game.

It’s the second straight loss for OCC (12-7, 2-2 in conference),

which had won six straight before that.

The Tigers (14-4, 2-2) went on to extend its lead to double digits

before OCC closed to within six in the final minute.

Riverside sophomore Leslie Pickron scored a game-high 22 points.

Mesa holds signups

* BASEBALL: The Costa Mesa Pony League will hold final signups for

the Spring 2005 baseball season today from 9 a.m. until Noon at Costa

Mesa High. The Pony Division is for players 13 and 14.
