Anteater men, women dominate invitational

The UC Irvine men’s swimming team added titles in the distance
invitational and the relay invitational to its sprint invitational
crown to become the only program in the 25-year history of the
two-day UCI/Ayres Hotel & Suites invitational competition to sweep
all three titles. The event was completed Sunday at the Anteater
Aquatics Complex.
UCI won all 10 men’s relay events Sunday, including one victory by
its B team, when the A team was disqualified in the 4 X 50-yard
freestyle relay.
Also Sunday, UCI junior Anton Slobounov won the men’s three-meter
diving competition. He also won the one-meter diving event held
Saturday.
The UCI men topped the field in the 200 medley, the 3 X 100
backstroke, the 3 X 100 breaststroke, the 3 X 100 butterfly, the 4 X
200 free, the 400 medley, the 800 free, the 3 X 100 individual medley
and the 4 X 100 free relays Sunday to outscore Cal Poly San Luis
Obispo, 482-437, in the relay invitational team standings.
Saturday, the UCI men amassed 317 points in the distance
invitational, well more than runner-up Cal State Northridge (191).
The UCI women also won the team title in the distance invitational
Saturday. They produced 290 team points, 155 more than second-place
Illinois.
Individually, the UCI men received event victories from Kareem
Adnan, Mike Cohee and Duke Krautim Saturday.
Adnan, a senior, won the 500 free in four minutes, 43.03 seconds.
He also touched first in the 1,650 free in a time of 16:17.12.
Cohee, a sophomore, was victorious in the 1,000 free (9:53.74) and
added a second-place finish in the 500 free (4:50.26).
Krautim, a sophomore, won the 400 individual medley in 4:07.25 and
was second in the 1,650 free (16:20.92).
In the women’s distance invitational Saturday, junior Lara
Bjargardottir and freshman teammate Madeline Klobuchar earned
victories for UCI.
Bjargardottir won the 400 IM in 4:27.56, while Klobuchar’s time of
10:33.08 was the fastest in the 1,000 free. Bjargardottir was also
third in the 1,650 free in 17:39.48.
Other top individual performances in the men’s distance
invitational were turned in by UCI’s: Eric Reilly (second in the
1,000 free in 10:03.74 and third in the 500 free in 4:53.69); Dreason
Barry (second in the 400 IM in 4:14.19); Randall Tom (third in the
400 IM in 4:18.10); Brian Buchanan (fourth in the 500 free in 4:55.94
and fifth in the 1,000 free in 10:18.12); Michael Radford (third in
the 1,650 free in 16:36.33); and Eddie Erazo (fourth in the 1,650
free).
In the women’s distance invitational, other UCI standouts
included: senior Alexis Sheridan (second in the 1,650 free in
17:23.14 and fifth in the 500 free in 5:02.86); Christina Venturacci
(second in the 1,000 free in 10:33.92); Megan Baker (third in the 400
IM in 4:34.25 and fifth in the 1,650 free in 17:49.16); Melissa Wong
(fourth in the 1,650 free in 17:46.20 and fifth in the 400 IM in
4:38.14); Abby Zern (fourth in the 500 free in 5:02.61 and fifth in
the 1,000 free in 10:48.45); and Aubrie Smallwood (fourth in the 400
IM in 4:37.33).
The UCI women finished second in the relay invitational.
