Marina dominates Westminster

The Marina High boys’ basketball team ended its preseason schedule on

a high note, as it dominated Westminster over the final three

quarters during Monday night’s nonleague clash en route to a 90-43

victory on the Lions’ home court.

The teams were tied after one quarter, but the Vikings rolled from

there.

Marina, which nailed 13 of 22 three-point shot attempts, had four

players score in double figures.

Matt Molino hit six of those 13 three-pointers and finished with a

game-high 32 points.

Molino also had nine assists.

Jeff DeLaunay scored 16 points, Mike Kinoshita got his 12 points

on four three-pointers and Sean Starkey had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

In other boys’ basketball action, Huntington Beach capped a strong

showing in tournament play at Katella by edging host Katella, 49-47,

in the tournament’s third-place game.

Matt Buckalew had 15 points and Brandon O’Bryan scored 10 more for

the Oilers.

Huntington also was defeated by eventual tournament champion

Servite, 56-27, in pool play. Andrew Nordin scored seven points for

the Oilers.

In other pool play, Huntington staged a second half rally to

defeat Rancho Alamitos, 61-57. Buckalew had a game-high 26 points.

Edison won the Walter Wong Tournament championship in Hawaii by

defeating Newbury Park, 48-39, in the championship final.

Thomas Marcin and T.J. Lipold each scored 13 points to lead the

Chargers.

Edison had advanced to the championship game by routing Sutherlin

of Oregon, 54-28, in a semifinal game.

Jeff Golden’s 17 points paced the Chargers.

In a semifinal-round game at the Century Tournament, Colony pulled

away from Ocean View in the second half, en route to a 77-64 victory.

Clint Amberry scored 19 points, John Greiner, who hit all four of

Ocean View’s four three-point baskets, had 14 points and Wynton

Johnson added 10 points.

In an earlier game, Ocean View came up with a big fourth quarter

and downed host Century, 54-45.

Amberry scored 11 points and Diego Delgado added 10 more for the

Seahawks, who outscored the Centurions by nine points in the final

eight minutes.

Also at the Century Tournament, Marina was a 74-58 winner over

Cerritos in second round action. DeLaunay and Molino each scored 19

points, Starkey had 16, and Chris Potrykus finished with 10 points

for the Vikings.

In girls’ basketball, co-host Edison lost to Santa Margarita,

35-29, in the third-place game of the Larry Doyle Orange County

Championships.

Bonita Stone led Edison with eight points. The Kepilino sisters,

Rebecca and Wahine, each scored seven points, and Audra Tamulaitis

scored six.

In the tournament’s seventh-place game, Allison Budzinski hit the

game-winning shot and capped a Marina rally that resulted in a 50-48

win over Woodbridge.

Marina, which co-hosted the tournament with Edison, trailed by as

much as 12 points in the game.

Budzinski led all scorers with 16 points, and teammates Erin

Barney and Rachael Maulit scored 15 and 10 points, respectively.

Barney hit five three-point shots in the game.

“This was a big win for us,†Marina Coach Butch Fredlow said of

the triumph over Woodbridge, then the No. 8-ranked team in the

county. “I told the girls, this was like playing a league game. They

really did a great job in this tournament.â€

In earlier tournament action, Marina was a 33-26 winner over Aliso

Niguel, as Budzinski poured in a game-high 15 points.

The Lady Vikings outscored the Wolverines by nine points in the

second half to wipe out a two-point halftime deficit.

Marina dropped a 75-55 decision to San Clemente in pool play.

Mo Holloway scored 16 points, Budzinski had 13 points and Maulit

scored 10 for the Lady Vikings.

Edison had a similar outcome to Marina, in tournament games

against San Clemente and Aliso Niguel.

The Chargers fell to San Clemente, 71-44, in a semifinal matchup.

Wahine Kepilino scored 14 points and Rebecca Kepilino chipped in 10.

They defeated Aliso Niguel, 32-26, in a low-scoring pool play

game. Rebecca Kepilino accounted for half of Edison’s 32 points by

scoring 16.

In earlier pool play at the tournament, Edison downed Capistrano

Valley, 57-43, and Marina defeated Cerritos, 51-42.

Rebecca Kepilino led all scorers with 26 points and Wahine

Kepilino scored 18 to lead Edison against Capistrano Valley.

Maulit and Holloway were Marina players in double figures with 14

and 10 points, respectively, in the win over Cerritos.

San Clemente won the 12-team tournament by defeating Hart, 58-52,

in the championship final.

At the San Marcos holiday tournament, Huntington Beach routed

Mission Hills, 69-28, in consolation play.

Forward Rebecca Murray’s 23 points topped all scorers, and Oiler

teammate Karissa Plotnik, also a forward, scored 17 points.

In wrestling, Edison finished third at the North Torrance

Tournament of Champions.

Three Chargers earned the runner-up spot in their respective

divisions as Dylan Jensen (130-pounds), Brandon Drucker (135) and

Romney Fuga (275) each finished in second place.
