Laguna Beach rally dooms Sailors
Senior Ivan Kovacevic scored a game-high 25 points for the visiting
Laguna Beach High boys basketball team, which rallied for a 61-57
nonleague victory over Newport Harbor Tuesday night.
Senior Taylor Young finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds while
Brett Perrine chipped in 13 points and Dennis Heenan added 12 points
for the Sailors (8-7), who led, 33-28, at halftime.
Laguna Beach (10-6), outscored the Sailors, 39-24, in the second
half.
Newport trailed by three points with 10 seconds remaining and had
possession, but missed a three-point attempt and the Breakers held on
from there.
The Sailors open Sea View League play at Foothill at 7 p.m.
Friday.
Lightning win
The Sage Hill School boys basketball team used host Fairmont Prep
as preparation for Friday’s Academy League opener by defeating the
Huskies, 59-48, Tuesday in a nonleague game.
Senior Matt Loper and freshman Jamie McGee combined for 18 of the
Lightning’s 22 fourth-quarter points to break open the three-point
lead Sage forged just before the fourth period started. McGee
finished with a game-high 24 points, including four three-pointers,
while Loper finished with 22 points.
The Lightning (13-3) open league play hosting Oxford Academy
Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Tim Lefler added eight points for the Lightning.
