Pirates knocked out
Cypress College outside hitter Tordra Sessions led all players with
25 kills as the 16th-seeded Chargers upset No. 8 Orange Coast, 27-30,
30-20, 30-26, 30-21, in the second round of the Southern California
regional playoffs Saturday night at Orange Coast.
Cypress (12-8) will be making its first-ever state tournament
appearance Dec. 3 in Stockton, while the Pirates finish their season
at 15-6.
Donka Drozd paced OCC with 17 kills, while middle blocker Melissa
Zapiain, an all-state selection, finished with 13 kills and 12 digs
to complete her two-year career at Orange Coast as the school’s
all-time leader with 659 kills.
Caitlin Parker had 49 assists and 10 digs for OCC and Nicole
Powers added 14 digs.
Bruins defeat Anteaters
* WATER POLO: The fifth-seeded UC Irvine men’s water polo team
lost, 10-6, to No. 1 UCLA in the semifinals Saturday in the Mountain
Pacific Sports Federation tournament at Stanford.
UCI added four goals in the fourth, but it would not be enough to
come back as UCLA scored a pair of goals in the fourth period for the
victory.
UCI senior Dan Noon and junior Dreason Barry each had two goals
for the Anteaters. A total of eight players scored for UCLA with Josh
Hewko and Brett Ormsby each scoring a pair. Junior Goalkeeper Joe
Wynn had eight saves for the Anteaters. Keeper Joe Axelrad had 14
saves for the Bruins.
UCI will face the loser of the USC/Stanford match at 3 p.m. today
in the third-place game of the tournament.
