Dick Hemus Dick Hemus died Nov. 16...

Dick Hemus

Dick Hemus died Nov. 16 at his home in Idaho. He was 66.

Mr. Hemus was born on May 10, 1938 in Laguna Beach. He graduated

from Cal State Long Beach and got his master’s degree from Pepperdine

University. He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard.

Mr. Hemus married his wife, Carol, in 1973. They met while

teaching in Laguna Beach at Thurston Middle School, where he had a

30-year career as an Industrial Arts teacher. After retirement, Mr.

Hemus and Carol moved to Garfield Bay on Lake Pend Oreille in North

Idaho.

Mr. Hemus enjoyed woodworking, golf, water skiing, snowboarding

and traveling in his RV. He was a was a ski/board instructor at

Schweitzer Mountain Resort in Sandpoint, Idaho for 13 years. He was an avid runner and cyclist, competing in many triathlons and

marathons -- including the 2003 New York City Marathon.

Mr. Hemus is survived by his wife, Carol; daughters Janis Brahams

Strockis of San Diego; Connie Brahams Coatsworth of Costa Mesa; and

brother Robert Hemus of Happy Camp, Calif.

He is preceded in death by his mother Marian Hemus.

A gathering in his honor will take place at the home of Connie and

Ken Coatsworth in Costa Mesa from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 30. Information:

William Farrow Mitchell

William Farrow “Bill†Mitchell died Oct. 20 in Palm Springs after

a battle with cancer. He was 74.

Mr. Mitchell was born Aug. 10 in Los Angeles. He graduated from

Washington High School in Los Angeles and UC Santa Barbara in 1953.

Mr. Mitchell had a home in Laguna Beach as well as the San

Fernando Valley and Palm Springs.

Mr. Mitchell was a television writer. He started his television

career at a small station in Santa Barbara and moved to the

production unit of North American.

His first television writing job was working for the sit-com “Life

of Riley.†In the 1960’s and 1970’s he worked for Chuck Barris in

developing “The Dating Game†and “The Newlywed Game.†He also worked

with Bill Carruthers in 1985 to develop “Press Your Luck.â€

When he retired, Mr. Mitchell turned his hobby of horse racing

into a mini career.

Mr. Mitchell is preceded in death by his parents, Bill Sr. and

Vivian Mitchell Whittlesey, and survived by his many friends and

relatives.

He was interred at Forest Lawn in Cypress.

Robert F. Mahan

Robert F. Mahan of Laguna Beach died Nov. 18 at the Irvine Medical

Center. He was 40.

Mr. Mahan was a lifelong resident of Laguna Beach and a driver for

the Pacific Coast Towing Company.

Mr. Mahan is survived by his sons Jason, Eric and Jonathan;

brother Westley; and mother Elizabeth.

Services will be at 4 p.m. today at the Chapel of McCormick and

Son Mortuary.
