Breakers edge rival for title

The AYSO Region 97 girls under-14 Newport Breakers defeated OSC

United, 2-1, in the championship game Nov. 13.

Sara Gomez scored the winning goal in the second half on a

breakaway. Alex Griggs and Stephanie Castor passed the ball up to

Gomez for the score.

Gomez scored the first goal for the Breakers on a penalty kick.

Shannon Rohan, Alice Cope, Bailey Johnson, and Katy Storch played

in midfield, while Christina Cooley, Malia Hohl, Cayla Porter and

Shelby Porter played on defense.

Stephanie Neely played in goal and blocked a second-half penalty

kick that would have tied the game.

In boys under-13 play:

* Newport Mesa Infinity 4, SC Bulldogs 2

The Newport Mesa Infinity club team extended its unbeaten streak

to 12 games with a come-from-behind 4-2 win over the first place SC

Bulldogs Saturday.

The Bulldogs, who have never beaten Newport Mesa, were stunned in

the third minute of the game when Rodrigo Ruvalcaba hit a 40-yard

free kick into the upper corner of the goal.

But the Bulldogs rallied to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

In the second half Juan Gonzalez scored two goals for Newport,

while Rory Kew and Simon Hedrick forced several turnovers.

Solid team defense by Zac Chocek, John Ryder, Daniel Netzer and

Austin Wobrock kept the Bulldogs at bay. Jesse Perez played in goal

and the Bulldog midfield was kept under pressure by Gavin Arblaster,

Sean Donahue, Shane Rocco and Cameron Conway.

In the final minute, Gonzalez drove in the stake as he completed

his hat trick, with assists from Sean Davis and Erickson Klein.

After having lost two of their first four games, the Infinity have

found their stride and have climbed the CSL Delta Division table to

finish in second place with a record of 10-2-2.

Next they will take on Culver City and Laguna Niguel in second

round play.

In girls under-10 play:

* Pink Pussycats 4, Juicy Pineapples 3

The Pink Pussycats closed out their season in triple overtime with

a 4-3 win. Courtney Buck scored for the Pussycats with support from

Emily Nall, Casey Duckworth, Danica Hurley, Gigi Light and Katie

Reed.

Anchoring the defense were Meghan Vance, Jessica Arnold, Jenna

Jarvis and Sarah Whitney. Andria Spears played goalkeeper for the

Pussycats and made numerous saves.

After double overtime, the game went to penalty kicks to decide

the match.

Casey Duckworth stopped all Pineapples’ attempts and goals by Gigi

Light, Sarah Whitney and Casey Duckworth sealed the win for the

Pussycats.

In boys under-10 play:

* Avalanche

The Avalanche broke open a scoreless tie with three second half

goals, claiming the boys under-10 championship with a 3-0 win over

the UFOs.

In goal, Rory Fleming made two scrambling saves for the Avalanche,

diving at the feet of an attacker on one save inside the goalie box.

Nic Sargeant, Joey Gregory and Kevin Rakestraw had shots turned away

by the UFO goalie.

The Avalanche took the lead in the second half on Gage Coffelt’s

shot. Sargeant set up the goal with a crisp assist after drawing

three defenders to the left of the goal. Sargeant then added two

goals to put the game out of reach.

The Avalanche defense consisted of Parker Martinez, Gordon Lewis,

Bobby Kearns, Adam Josephson, Valentin Castanon, Brendan Goddwin and

Riley Ricker. Scott Grew and Sam Jones anchored the offense.

In girls under-7 play:

* Speckled Green Gators

Scores for the Gators were made by Paige Tamblyn, Olivia Jones,

Katie Kearns and Emma Vjunovich. Assisting the team were Megan Keys,

Sara Boese, Jacque Defeo and Emily Goltz.

In boys under-7 play:

* Green Hornets

Colby Brockhoff, Jacob McKelby, Adam Fulmizi, Hunter White,

Griffin Gout, Garrett Kerley, Jake McIntyre and Mitchell Steinke all

had numerous shots and passes, while also playing defense.

In boys under-6 play:

* Purple Dragons

Chase Adelsohn scored from 15-yards out, splitting two defenders

for his first goal of the season in the most crucial part of the game

for the Purple Dragons.
