Man dies after scooter collides with pickup
A 32-year-old Westminster man died Wednesday morning after his
Vespa scooter and a pickup truck collided in a Costa Mesa
intersection.
Aaron Jacob Dekoyer was riding his scooter west on South Coast
Drive at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday when he crashed into a pickup
truck driving north on Harbor Boulevard, according to police. It
isn’t clear if Dekoyer or the pickup driver, 46-year-old Santa Ana
resident Juan Castro, was at fault in the accident, Costa Mesa Police
Sgt. Marty Carver said.
Dekoyer was conscious and able to talk at the accident scene,
Carver said. But he died at 4:40 a.m. at Western Medical Center in
Santa Ana, according to supervising deputy coroner Mitchell Sigal.
The cause of death is not yet known.
Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the accident, Carver
said. The Orange County Sheriff-Coroner’s Department will conduct
toxicology tests on Dekoyer, Sigal said.
Any witnesses to the accident are asked to call Costa Mesa Police
Investigator Carlos Diaz at (714) 754-5264.
