UCI swimmers honored
Sophomore Dan Simonsen and freshman Chelsea Nagata were each named
Big West Conference Athlete of the Week for their swimming
performances at the UCI/Speedo Cup in Long Beach.
Simonsen swam the fastest times in the Big West this season in the
100-yard breaststroke and 200 breast with times of 56.19 and 2:05.45,
respectively.
Nagata broke the UCI record in the 50 free with a time of 23.62,
which is the fastest time in the Big West this season. She finished
third in the 100 fly with a time of 55.69, also the fastest in the
Big West this season. She was a member of the UCI-record breaking
relay team in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.89.
CdM players in tournament
* TENNIS: Four local girls will be competing in the United State
Tennis Association girls 16s national open championships at the Costa
Mesa Tennis Center today through Monday.
Jillian Braverman, who quit the Corona del Mar High tennis team
midway through the season, will be competing along with CdM players
Hayley Young, Jill Damion and Alexandra Walters.
Braverman faces Alexandria Griffen of Scottsdale, Ariz., while
Young faces Lyndsay Kinstier of Downey; Damion faces Cassie Bergeson
of San Jose; and Walters faces Marianna Khachatryan of Burbank.
Thune earns NAIA distinction
* CROSS COUNTRY: Distance runner Jenny Thune, Vanguard
University’s Lion of the Week, ended her collegiate career as an NAIA
All-American.
Last weekend, in Vanguard’s first team appearance at the NAIA
women’s national championships in Louisville, Ky., Thune set the pace
for her team, which finished six places above its 25th ranking.
Thune’s time of 18:34 was good for 29th place among 258 runners,
the second-highest finish of any VU runner, and marks only the second
NAIA All-American runner in the history of the program.
