Loyola charges past Edison
Mike Sciacca
Edison High had to feel pretty good about jumping on defending
champion Loyola Friday night in the first-round of the CIF-Southern
Section Division I football playoffs, its early lead putting the host
Cubs in a hole.
But Loyola, which has not lost a first-round playoff game in 19
years, stormed back from a 7-0 deficit to take control and eventually
win, 28-14, at Glendale High.
The loss ended Edisonâs season at 6-5.
It was a season of âwhat ifsâ for the Chargers, who lost their
final three games. Four of their losses came by a touchdown or less.
Edison had several chances to pull off an upset of the Cubs, but
its inability to cash in inside the red zone and turnovers squelched
those opportunities.
âItâs kind of the story of our season,â Edison Coach Dave White
said. âWe played good and we played hard, but we had too many
turnovers and we couldnât score inside their 10-yard line.â
Chargers quarterback Brian Shrock and Adam Goodman teamed up on a
touchdown pass in the first quarter to give Edison an early 7-0 lead.
Shrock accounted for 350 yards of total offense.
âLast year, this team surpassed expectations and this year, we
didnât meet them,â White said. âWe have a lot of young players on
this team.
âI told the kids that if youâre always reaching your goal, then
youâre not setting them high enough. This team tried to reach its
goals and to me, thatâs success. Iâm very proud of these kids.â
In girlsâ golf, Marinaâs Jennifer Osborn finished third overall at
the CIF State Championships at Red Hill Country Club in Rancho
Cucamonga.
Osborn shot a two-over-par 74.
In CIF girlsâ volleyball, Huntington Beach joined Edison in the
semifinal round of the Division II-AA playoffs, but the Oilers were
eliminated by Mater Dei, 17-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-17, at the
Huntington gym.
The Oilers, an at-large entry from the Sunset League, rolled in
the first game over the favored Monarchs, the Serra League champion
and top-seed in the division.
Huntington was led by Felicia Ciarelli with 12 kills and Laura
Ball had 10 kills.
In CIF girlsâ tennis, Edisonâs season came to an end in the
Division II quarterfinals in a 13-5 loss to Marlborough. The Chargers
couldnât recover from being swept in singles play.
In doubles action, Edisonâs top team of Lauren Boyer and Carly
Spreeman earned a sweep, and the No. 2 team of Vi Truong and Lauren
Okine won two of three sets.
âIt was fitting that Lauren Boyer swept her last match,â Edison
Coach Nick Friendt said. âShe finishes this year with a record of
51-7.â
Edison, the No. 3 entry from the Sunset League, finished 14-9.
The Chargers were one of three Sunset teams to advance to the
quarterfinals, joining Los Alamitos and Fountain Valley.
Marlborough was the Sunshine League champion.
