Lawrence impressive for Sailors

Seven different players scored seven goals in three games Saturday
for the Newport Harbor High field hockey team in the Orange County
invitational at Marina.
The Sailors (10-1-2) defeated Santa Ana in the opener, 2-0, tied
Marina in the second game, 0-0, and handled Fountain Valley, 5-0, in
the finale.
Clemmie Anderson and Amanda Fallon scored goals for Newport in the
opener, while Julia Bernay, Whitney Browman, Laura Vassar, Alley
Ramser and Danica Kalmbach scored against the Barons. Harbor goalie
Ciara Lawrence recorded 20 saves against Fountain Valley.
Pacific sweeps UCI
* VOLLEYBALL: The Pacific women’s volleyball team swept visiting
UC Irvine, 30-22, 30-25, 30-23, in Big West Conference action
Saturday night. Kelly Wing and Amanda Vazquez had 13 kills each for
the Anteaters (7-4, 1-2 in conference), who lost their fourth
straight.
Hess sparks Vanguard
* SOCCER: Matt Hess scored four goals as the Vanguard men’s soccer
team dismantled Alliant, 10-1, in nonconference men’s soccer action
Saturday night.
Final slated at Costa Mesa
* TENNIS: Lesley Joseph and Denis Zivkovic, both of the United
States, will square off in the singles championship match at noon
today in the USTA men’s Futures Tour stop at Costa Mesa Tennis
Center.
Lions fall in five
* VOLLEYBALL: The Vanguard University women’s volleyball team
pushed defending NAIA champion Fresno Pacific, but the visiting
Sunbirds earned a 26-30, 30-25, 30-28, 27-30, 15-5 Golden State
Athletic Conference victory Saturday afternoon.
Jaclyn Lee paced the Lions (17-5, 4-2 in conference), ranked No. 5
in the NAIA, with 17 kills, while Kim Wynn added 15 and Keri DeHaas
chipped in 11.
UCI 4th, 5th at Stanford
* CROSS COUNTRY: The UC Irvine women’s team finished fourth of 19
teams and the Anteater men’s squad was fifth of 20 teams at the
Stanford invitational.
Kim Ramirez led the Anteater women with a fifth-place finish of
22:07, Marie Nguyen was 11th in 22:30 and Candice Proctor was 23rd in
22:55. Kim Handel finished 33rd (23:07), Erinn Kim was 41st (23:21),
Kelli Vanderburg placed 43rd (23:22) and Amber Gordon was 53rd
(23:37) to round out UCI’s top seven runners.
For the Anteater men, junior Ricky Barnes finished seventh in
24:15, Tom Whelan was 28th in 25:09 and Tim Hearst 39th in 25:29.
Andrew Garratt placed 42nd (25:32), David Santos was 43rd (25:32),
Ryan Ketcham finished 61st (25:55) and John Kluve 63rd (25:57) to
round out UCI’s first seven.
Sea Kings at .500
* WATER POLO: Corona del Mar High’s boys water polo team (4-4)
lost to La Canada, 9-7, and defeated Marina, 11-9, in the South Coast
tournament Saturday.
UCLA edges ‘Eaters
* WATER POLO: UCLA held host UC Irvine scoreless in the second
half as the Bruins went on to a 6-4 win in nonconference men’s water
polo action Saturday night.
UCI took a 4-3 lead at halftime on the strength of two extra-man
goals by junior Dreason Barry, but UCLA (6-2) rallied to win.
Junior goalie Joe Wynne recorded six stops for the Anteaters
(7-3).
