Slammers soar to two titles
The Newport-Beach based Slammers FC soccer club’s girls under-16
team, which includes Corona del Mar High’s Taylor Fallon and Newport
Beach resident Jackie Zinke, went 10-0 in winning two prestigious
national tournaments in consecutive weeks earlier this month.
The Slammers went 4-0, including a 2-0 victory over San Juan in
the final of the eight-team National Cup III, staged by United States
Club Soccer, in Stony Brook, N.Y., Aug. 8. The Slammers allowed just
one goal in outscoring tournament foes, 6-1.
A week earlier, the Slammers outscored their six foes, 14-0, in
claiming the 24th annual San Diego Surf Cup. On Aug. 2, the Slammers
defeated the San Diego Surf, 2-0, in the semifinals before downing a
team from Honolulu, 1-0, in the final.
Fallon earned first-team All-Pacific Coast League laurels as a
sophomore forward for the Sea Kings, who finished third in league
before losing in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division
II playoffs.
Corona del Mar club team captures silver
* The Corona del Mar Soccer Club under-12 boys team won the silver
division of the Capistrano Cup, completed Aug. 15.
Colton Gyulay scored two goals to lead a 6-0 win over Alliance
Blue from San Diego in the tournament championship game. CdM also
received single goals from Brennan Anderson, Mason Case, Jack Gorab
and Taylor Ross in the title game.
CdM goalie Logan Newett anchored the defensive effort that
produced two shutouts in Corona del Mar’s four wins without a loss.
CdM, coached by Chris Roselli, outscored its opponents, 23-2, in
the tournament.
Also contributing to the tournament championship team were: Caleb
Candelaria, Nick Curci, Brent Gray, Will Morrow, Jensen Rinehart and
Kjell Wolker.
