Mesa masters tourney

The Costa Mesa High boys basketball team wrapped up its summer league
schedule with five straight victories to win the Cerritos Valley
Christian tournament July 22-25. Mesa defeated St. Bernard, 52-37, in
the semifinals before downing La Salle, 43-33, in the tournament
final.
With the five straight wins, Mesa finished the summer 17-4 under
new coach Ryan Schachter, hired to replace Bob Serven, who resigned
after five seasons in April.
In the Servite tournament two weeks earlier, the Mustangs defeated
Servite, La Canada and Santa Margarita before losing to Diamond Ranch
in the final.
Schachter noted the play of Jeff Waldron, Scott Knox, Brian
Molina, William Lefebvre and Larry Puente during the Cerritos
tournament. Waldron averaged 13.6 points and 12.1 rebounds for Mesa
last season while Knox drained 91 three-pointers -- believed to be a
school single-season record. Knox, who will be a junior this fall,
tallied a Newport-Mesa record 10 treys in a Golden West League game
against Santa Ana.
In the UC Irvine tournament earlier this summer, Mesa defeated El
Dorado and Woodbridge.
