Man arrested after Subway holdup
Three men, one brandishing a handgun, forced two Subway employees
into the restaurant’s refrigerator and stole money from the cash
register Friday night, police said.
William Adam Banks, 22, was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery
around 8 p.m., and Costa Mesa police were still looking for two other
suspects at press time.
The three males entered the Subway restaurant at 1815 Newport
Blvd., said Lt. Dale Birney of the Costa Mesa Police Department, and
the police were called after the suspects left the restaurant. Then
an officer on duty noticed someone matching the given description.
Banks was arrested near Fire Station No. 3 on Park Avenue shortly
after officers were notified of the robbery. Banks’ bail was set at
$100,000, Birney said.
Birney said that officers were setting up a sobriety checkpoint on
17th Street and Westminster Avenue when the robbery was reported, so
several officers were already in the area.
“These guys picked the wrong night at the wrong location to do
their robbery deeds,” Birney said.
