Police warn against calls
Newport Beach police are warning the public about fraudulent phone
calls from people claiming to do summer security checks, officials
said.
The Newport Beach Police Department has a program largely run by
its volunteers in which the volunteers would oblige community
members’ request to “keep an eye” on their homes when they are gone
for summer vacation, said Newport Beach Police Sgt. Steve Shulman.
“But we never solicit people to use that service,” he said. “If
someone calls us and tells us they need us to provide that service,
we do that.”
Shulman said the department got reports that whoever is making the
fraudulent calls is asking people about their plans for the summer.
“Do not give out any information regarding this over the phone,”
he said.
Anyone requiring such a service can call the police department at
(949) 644-3717.
