Gearing up for big No. 255 and the ‘un-parade’

JIM DE BOOM

Andre Sommersell, a 6-foot-2, 235-pound outside linebacker from

Colorado State, was selected No. 255 by the Oakland Raiders, the

final pick in the 2004 NFL College Draft in New York City,

automatically becoming Mr. Irrelevant XXIX and will be celebrated

this coming week in a series of events. At 11:30 a.m. on Friday,

Sommersell will be the grand marshal in the Irrelevant Week

“Un-Parade” on Newport Center Drive.

If you have always wanted to be in a parade, here is your chance.

Join the parade honoring Sommersell by bringing your cause and car,

pickup truck, golf cart or bicycle at 11 a.m. in Muldoon’s parking

lot, 202 Newport Center Drive, Newport Beach. That’s the parade

formation area, according to Melanie Fitch, the “Un-Parade”

organizer.

Sommersell will venture to Northern Trust for a check presentation

as he becomes a millionaire for a day, then will parade back to

Muldoon’s, where KMPC-AM (710) anchors John Ireland and Steve Mason

will broadcast the Irrelevant Week Parade in a live remote until 4

p.m.

Friday night is Blue Beet Birthday Party, celebrating Mr.

Irrelevant’s 24th birthday and Miss Irrelevant Contest. It is at the

Blue Beet by the Newport pier, with the party beginning at 9 p.m.

with the Miss Irrelevant Contest at 11 p.m. There will be a live

band, birthday cake and birthday surprises for Sommersell. And don’t

forget the arrival party and press conference beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Monday at the Newport Dunes Resort, 1131 Back Bay Drive, Newport

Beach.

More than 600 city, county and business leaders are expected to

attend when Sommersell is showered with hundreds of gifts from

business and college and professional sports teams around the

country. The admission price of $10 per person includes food from

Bluewater Grill, Fireman’s Chili, Picante Martins, Clayton Shurley’s

Real BBQ, Bamboo Bistro, Ristorante Mamma Gina’s, Cannery Restaurant

and live entertainment and a no-host bar. Money raised during

Irrelevant Week helps Costa Mesa United, Carson Palmer Foundation and

Hillview Acres Children’s Home. For more information on Irrelevant

Week events, or to register for the Miss Irrelevant Contest, call
